Swim teams encouraged by regular season progress

|

For the Dartmouth swimming and diving teams, success is seldom defined in black and white terms. An eventual team loss to a superior opponent is often less important than the individual improvements that can result from swimming against stiffer competition. Such has been the case this season for the Big Green swim teams, which will put the finishing touches on the regular season when the women compete in Saturday's Middlebury Invitational.

Dartmouth seniors Libby Ludlow '06 and Pat Biggs '06, both in their Olympic premiere, appear to have realistic chances at podium spots in the super-G and Slalom.

Princeton sinks swim teams in regular season finale

Teresa Lattanzio / The Dartmouth Staff Dartmouth swimming and diving teams took advantage of the weekend competitions as they set their sights on the EISL and Ivy League Championships that begin at the end of next month. The women's squad (2-8, 1-6 Ivy) completed an impressive non-conference victory over Northeastern on Saturday, and both the men's and women's squads showed their individual strengths with encouraging performances against powerhouse Princeton on Sunday. In Boston on Saturday, the women's team swim played to a virtual tie that was finally broken on the meet's final event.

Asafu Suzuki / The Dartmouth Staff The Dartmouth women's basketball team played like champions last weekend, capturing wins against Ivy League rivals Brown (9-8, 3-1 Ivy) and Yale (1-16, 0-4 Ivy) at home in Leede Arena. The Big Green improves its record to 12-4 and moves up the rankings in the Ivy League with a 3-0 record, tying the Princeton Tigers -- who were idle last weekend -- for first place. On Friday night, Dartmouth handed a struggling Brown squad its first league loss of the season in a 73-51 decision. "Brown was supposed to be a very good team, and I think we shut them down pretty well.

Over the past forty seasons, the Steelers have advanced to the Super Bowl five times, losing only once. Since joining the league thirty years ago, the Seahawks have never made it this far. The last time we saw a franchise in its first Super Bowl appearance, the Buccaneers easily handled the Raiders.

Women's basketball assumes role as '06 Ivy favorite

Asafu Suzuki / The Dartmouth Staff The Big Green has Jeannie Cullen '06, the three-point specialist with more than 1,000 career points; Angie Soriaga '06, the senior guard with 296 career assists; Krista Perry '06, the underappreciated defense-woman; Sydney Scott '08, the sophomore who stepped up to the plate this season and replaced All-Ivy selection Elise Morrison '07; and Ashley Taylor '07, the versatile junior who can do just about everything. But for those of you that are not too familiar with Ivy League basketball, fortunes can change hands in as short a time span as two years. It is astonishing to think that the Dartmouth women's basketball team (10-4, 1-0 Ivy) was an underdog in the league only two seasons ago.
