Women's basketball downs Siena in historic comeback

In the second-biggest comeback effort in NCAA Division I women's basketball history, Dartmouth women's basketball overcame a 21-point deficit in the second half to defeat the Siena Saints in overtime, 86-82. Although Siena defeated Dartmouth in a 51-49 thriller last year and holds an 8-5 edge in the all-time series record, the Big Green improved its overall record to 7-3 on the season with the win and halted the Saints' four-game winning streak against Dartmouth. Two minutes into the first half, Dartmouth opened the scoring with a layup by Sydney Scott '08, but the Saints outshot the Big Green thereafter to open up a commanding 56-35 advantage with 13:23 left in the second half.

Crew ends fall season in Boston

The Dartmouth crew program can have high expectations for their spring season after turning in impressive times at their fall regattas. This past weekend's regatta, the Foot of the Charles, concluded the Big Green's fall schedule. Perhaps the most impressive performance of Dartmouth's crew was the lightweight "C" boat racing in the men's varsity four division. The boat, crewed mainly by sophomores, turned in the Big Green's top time in the race, finishing in front of Dartmouth's three other lightweight boats and all three heavyweight boats. The lightweight "C" finished 20th out of the 48-boat race. The Big Green's lightweight "A" freshman eight rowed their way to a strong finish, beating 22 of the 28 teams in their race including Harvard's lightweight "A" boat. Dartmouth's heavyweight "A" boat finished just seconds behind and wound up with eighth place. It was the first race for the heavyweight crew with "stacked" boats; they had previously split up their best rowers between two boats in "mixed" competition. Christopher Brouwer '09, the two-seat in the freshman heavyweight "A" boat, was pleased with the team's performance but is cautious of complacency. "In comparison to past years, we did pretty well as far as the standings go," he said. "We rowed really well technically, which is one of our big focuses over the fall especially for the heavyweights.

Women's basketball clobbers Quinnipiac 90-42 at home

Considering that all the players from last year's Ivy League championship team are returning to the Leede Arena hardwood, expectations for the Dartmouth women's basketball team are high for the 2005-06 season. But if its first game is any indicator, the Big Green looks more than poised to live up to the hype after its 90-42 drubbing of Quinnipiac on Friday night at home. The game proved to be a lopsided affair from the opening tip.

For the Dartmouth men's cross country team, this will be the longest season it has had in years. Not since 2001 has the Big Green secured a bid to the NCAA Championships, but today, the men will again return to the national stage, running against 30 of the country's top programs in Terre Haute, Ind.

Men's x-country, Schorr to run for national championship

Dartmouth men's runners stormed to an NCAA qualifying bid and the women saw one of their own also make the cut as the Big Green cross country teams ran at the NCAA Northeast Region Meet in Boston's Franklin Park Saturday. The men, ranked 16th nationally, took second out of 33 teams with a score of 50, bested only by Iona College's 33. Providence College finished third with a score of 67. "At the beginning of the season, Iona was ranked sixth," said men's coach Barry Harwick '77 of Iona's first place score. "[Saturday] was the first time Iona was together [as a full team] and they are probably in the top six in the country." He also added, "[Dartmouth] ran very, very well and I think this puts us in a great position going into the nationals." Ben True '08 led the scoring for Dartmouth yet again, finishing third overall in a field of over 200 in 30:03.8, and Alec Wall '08 was close behind, taking seventh in 30:07.5.
