Softball begins season 3-2 in Fla.

The Dartmouth Despite frosty weather in Hanover, the softball team was hot this weekend, opening its season with a 3-2 record in the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla. The Big Green won their first three games before dropping the final two to the tournament's host Florida Gulf Coast University (19-4, 0-0 Atlantic Sun) in two high-scoring affairs. The key to the Big Green's success was coordinated offensive power, according to co-captain Ashley Gleason '09. "The entire lineup was batting well, and we helped each other out," she said. Dartmouth scored nine runs against FGCU on the weekend.

Jesse Adler '10 went undefeated in singles matches this weekend and won two of three of her doubles matches with partner Carissa King '12.

Athletic donations down 25 percent, Harper says

|

Dartmouth Athletic Director Josie Harper said that recent budget cuts and a fall in donations has led the department to eliminate the positions of assistant ticket manager and coordinator for the fitness center, and implement an immediate salary freeze consistant with a College-wide plan. The athletic department's losses are different than those of other departments, because of the department's array of income resources, Harper said. She explained that since so much of the department's money comes from the Friends of Dartmouth Athletics funds and other alumni donations, the department has suffered a loss from multiple angles. "All of our soft money, or Friend money, is down, as well as our endowment," Harper said. Harper would not comment on the exact percentage that has been cut from the budget thus far, but she said that further cuts will be forthcoming as donations to the department continue to wane. "Right now we're bringing in 25 percent less in donations," she said. Members of the athletic department have been working hard to rework expenditures, Harper said. Harper explained that currently, the department is looking at cutting the budget in every way possible.

KARR'S CHRONICLES: Madness Preview

|

This is my favorite time of the year -- when February turns to March. The coming of March means two things this year: (1) A new U2 album on March 3, and (2) the official beginning of March Madness, the always-shocking, ever-glorious college basketball tournament that is one of the greatest sporting events in the country.

Coed club tennis team earns bid to National Championship

|

Dartmouth's varsity tennis teams will not be the only ones with a shot at national recognition this spring, as the Dartmouth club tennis team has earned a bid to the United States Tennis Association's National Campus Championship this April in Surprise, Ariz. After winning the New England Campus Championship on Saturday, the coed team earned an automatic place in the national championships, where it will square off with the likes of the University of Michigan and the defending champion University of Texas. The team, comprised of three men and three women, will be led by James Francis '10 as it prepares for the club's nationals debut. "It is definitely exciting, because the club has not even played in a regional before, and now we're going to the championships," singles player Maggie Bell '10 said.
