After an up-and-down start to the season and a week-long hiatus from playing matches, the Dartmouth women's tennis team suffered a letdown and fell to Boston University on Wednesday, 4-3. The 61st-ranked Big Green (1-3) played Boston University (3-2) in a traditionally difficult matchup, faltering against the Terriers. "We go back and forth with them," Carissa King '12 said.

League starts initiative to mitigate risks of head injury

Maggie Rowland / The Dartmouth Staff In response to concerns about a recent increase in head injuries across sports including major professional sports leagues, like the NFL Ivy League representatives are now collaborating to improve concussion prevention, detection and treatment in athletics, according to Director of Health Services Jack Turco. Although still in its early stages, an initiative launched this month led by College President Jim Yong Kim and Cornell University President David Skorton will set an example for athlete safety in college athletics by developing recommendations and policies for safe play at practices and games, according to Turco. A committee composed of Kim, Skorton, football coaches, trainers, doctors and other experts was initially formed to focus on football head injuries. The program will now take the same basic principles and apply them to other sports, Turco said. "We obviously don't want to exclude other contact sports," he said. A major goal of the initiative is to ensure that sideline concussion tests brief exams that are intended to determine whether or not a concussion has taken place in athletes who have sustained head injuries are as accurate as possible so that concussed players do not continue to play while injured, Turco said. The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine released a study advocating a new sideline concussion test that can detect a concussion in less than a minute on Feb.

Dong's Top 10

As January quietly turned into February, the national sports scenery rapidly changed. To give you a quick update, pitchers and catchers will report to MLB spring training in under a week, and the long and arduous journey also known as the NFL season has finally come to an end (congratulations to the Packers, you now officially have four more Super Bowl titles than my poor Philadelphia Eagles). At Dartmouth, the sports scene is gradually shifting as well.

On the road, Big Green athletes experience more than away games

/ The Dartmouth Staff While a home crowd of family members, friends and fans provides support and comfort for competing Dartmouth athletes, road trips equally shape Big Green athletes' experiences, compelling them to bond with their teammates and otherwise acclimate to a less-than-encouraging rival environment. When teams like basketball, tennis, squash and track and field go on the road, they share experiences that help bring them together, both on and off the court. The men's basketball team generally begins its trips the day prior to the game, grabbing last-minute snacks from the Courtyard Cafe before heading onto the bus.
