The Dartmouth men's and women's swimming teams and the men's tennis team enjoyed success this weekend against non-conference foes. The tennis team faced Boston College and Sacred Heart University, and won both matches by large margins. Members of both swim teams fared well at the Middlebury Invite against Williams College, Amherst College, Marywood University, Middlebury College and the University of Vermont.
The weekend gave the men's tennis team a chance to prepare for League play, and boosted the swim teams' morale as their seasons approach the finish line.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING
The Big Green made impressive strides on Friday, after traveling to Middlebury, Vt., to compete in the Middlebury Invite. In the men's 1000-yard freestyle, co-captain Billy Haley '11 and Ben Feeser '13 took first and second place, respectively, with times of 10:11.10 and 10:19.98. Haley also finished first in the men's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:52.64.
Dan Hochman '11 finished first in the men's 100-yard backstroke in 54.11 seconds. Jason Wong '13 took fourth place in the same event with a time of 1:01.11.
In the men's 50-yard freestyle, Alex Kamai '12 finished fourth, losing by eight hundreths of a second to Williams sophomore Daeus Jorento.
The Big Green particularly dominated the 100-yard freestyle, with Hochman finishing first with a time of 48.06 seconds, Kamai placing third in 48.82 seconds, and Nick Burford '14 finishing fourth in 51.82 seconds.
Hochman, Kamai, Haley and Feeser also finished in third place in the men's 200-yard freestyle relay.
Haley said the meet provided a much-needed boost for the Big Green's morale.
"It was a great meet for us," he said. "I don't think there was anyone who was disappointed with how they did."
The Invite provided an opportunity for Dartmouth to compete in a less competitive atmosphere than what swimmers typically face in their usual League schedule, according to Haley.
The women's team also swam well at the meet, as Shelley Wenzel '14 won the women's 50-yard freestyle in 25.02 seconds and placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.71 seconds. Tara Henn '12 took first place in the women's 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.72, beating her second-place opponent, UVM freshman Marcella Melloni, by more than five seconds. Henn also finished in fourth place in the 100-yard backstroke.
On Saturday, the remainder of the Dartmouth women's swim team placed first against both the University of Rhode Island and Northeastern University in a home tri-meet. Katy Feng '14, Madison McClenney '13, Christine Kerr '14 and Danielle Kerr '14 all won multiple events at the meet, helping deliver the Big Green a 176-119 victory against Northeastern and a 198-94 win against the University of Rhode Island.
MEN'S TENNIS
The Big Green men's tennis team crushed Boston College, 6-1, at the Boss Tennis Center on Saturday, before beating Sacred Heart, 7-0, at home on Sunday.
Dartmouth swept all three doubles rounds and won five of its six singles matches against Boston College.
Michael Laser '12 upset junior Akash Muppidi who was ranked 84th in the nation at the end of last season in the first singles match. Laser beat Muppidi in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-3. Cameron Ghorbani '14, Chris Ho '12, Brandon DeBot '14 and co-captain Curtis Roby '11 also won matches in straight sets.
Roby said the Big Green went into the match prepared, and expected a high level of competition going into the match.
"They play a lot of the Ivies, so we know their level," Roby said. Dartmouth won each singles and doubles match against Sacred Heart, and five of the six singles players Laser, Roby, Ho, Xander Centenari '13 and Stephen Grief '11 won their matches in straight sets. Singles player Cameron Ghorbani '14 lost his second set, but prevailed in the third to break the tie.
The team will next play in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tennis Championship at Harvard University later this month.
