India-Pakistan: At a Standstill

|

Since the British partition of India in 1947 into mostly Muslim Pakistan and mostly Hindu India, tensions on the South Asian subcontinent have remained dangerously high amid fears that the two nuclear powers will go to war because both want control of the Indian state of Kashmir and because both have nothing better to do.

Food Court Fun

|

In these overcrowded days, even the act of grabbing a bite to eat can feel like a chore. Who among us has not been witness to the surging masses of people stifling Food Court at prime meal time (6 to 7:30 p.m.)? I and hundreds of others have felt buffeted by the throngs, have traveled through the bane of claustrophobics in that basic quest for sustenance.

The Make-Up Artist

Thursday was my Mom's birthday. I'm feeling kind of guilty about the present I gave her. Somehow, it just doesn't seem like enough, all things considered.

Hope for Israel

|

By Mohamad Bydon '01 In her Jan. 10 column in The Dartmouth, entitled "Israelis and Palestinians: Fighting for Existence," Ana Bonnheim writes that the Palestinians must "meet the necessary goal of recognizing the state of Israel's right to exist." While the Palestinians did in fact recognize Israel's right to exist in the 1993 Oslo Accords, a general perception remains that the majority of Palestinians want nothing short of the destruction of the state of Israel.

The Week

Full Disclosure On Tuesday, the United States special envoy to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalizad, said that further bombing of Afghanistan was necessary to ensure a lasting defeat of the Taliban and al-Qaida. We support the air strikes.

Unless you are a high and mighty med student, like my friend Varun who thinks his future is paved with gold, chances are that you will need to submit a rsum at some point.

Israelis and Palestinians: Fighting for Existence

|

I would like to respond to Mohamad Bydon's Nov. 21 article in The Dartmouth entitled "Re-humanizing the Palestinians." In his article, he argues that the Palestinian people are simply "demanding freedom, a homeland and a solution to their refugee crisis." I would like to assert that the legitimate Palestinian goals of "freedom, a homeland and a solution to their refugee crisis" cannot be attained if Palestinians do not simultaneously meet the equally necessary goal of recognizing the state of Israel's right to exist. Mr. Bydon may well support a dual state solution to the current conflict between Israel and the Palestinians (he does not elaborate), allowing for both an independent Jewish state and an independent Palestinian state.

Don't Give Econ a Bad Name

For many sophomores, this is the term of reckoning. Within weeks, we will be expected to declare our majors and offer up a clear program of study to the powers that be.

Stabilizing South Asian Politics

Since a December terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament that killed 14 people, relations between India and Pakistan -- never close to begin with -- have been in particularly dire straits.

A Textbook Example

|

To the Editor, In an op-ed piece entitled "The Usual Suspect" that appeared in the Jan. 3, 2002 issue of The Dartmouth, the author, Pedro Csar De Los Santos Lora, said "The Hanover (and the New Hampshire) Police, apart from being inexperienced, were incompetent, ignorant and racist." Believe it or not, people who commit serious crimes actually lie about, and even deny, involvement (imagine that!). As the author stated, he was a potential suspect in a murder investigation, and while he knew he wasn't involved, the criminal investigators could not know that.

The Winter of Fitness

This is the Winter of Fitness. It's time to stop eating bread and cheese for every meal, stop driving to classes (maybe), and stop sitting around for so many hours a day.

Birthday Girl

I love birthdays. Some people don't like to make a big deal about them, but I love that feeling of "I am special" that the big day brings.

Excited about the Winter?

Welcome to Dartmouth in the winter. It's 10 degrees Fahrenheit outside, and the new North Face fleece you bought over the Christmas break doesn't quite seem to do the trick.

Obituary

|

On Jan. 2, the day I was set to fly to Boston, Spike, my fish of four years, met a tragic death. The snails, my father explained to me, had begun to eat away at his discolored and weak body, and my dad was forced to flush his limp carcass down the loo.

Major Pain

|

My fellow '04s, sophomore winter is finally here. It is now time to prepare to make the most important decision of our academic careers: do we face the cold to get an omelet for breakfast, or settle for a handful of stale Cheese-Its instead?
