Columnist delivers lecture on economy

"This is the end of the two decades boom, and perhaps bubble, in consumer spending," he said.

DMS team studies gene involved in sleep cycle

Correction appended A team of researchers at Dartmouth Medical School has identified a gene that could be targeted to help jet-lagged travelers or workers on a late shift adjust their bodies' internal clocks to new schedules. The team primarily studies the genetics and molecular biology of the circadian clock, a regulatory mechanism that drives many of the body's physiological processes including the sleep cycle, genetics department chair Jay Dunlap, one of the researchers involved with the study, said in an interview with The Dartmouth. The researchers decided to investigate the gene, named Id2, after tests indicated that it could be involved in the circadian system. The circadian clock dictates sleep patterns based on the natural light-dark cycle, Dunlap said, regardless of whether an individual is awake at night. "Even though you're on shift work, it doesn't mean that the clock is resetting," he said.

Students may have greater difficulty finding off-campus housing due to increased demand for rental properties in light of the current economic downturn.

Students rebuild following snow sculpture collapse

In the early morning hours of the night before Winter Carnival, dozens of students toiled under the glare of electric lamps, plastic buckets and snow shovels in hand, racing against time to rebuild the snow sculpture before the opening ceremony Thursday evening. This late night labor crew was organized by the Dartmouth Outing Club and the Snow Sculpture Committee after the south wall of the original snow sculpture, a scale model of Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, collapsed due to warm weather. With less than 24 hours before opening ceremonies, the Outing Club sent a mass e-mail to campus Wednesday evening soliciting ideas for a new sculpture that could be built overnight.

Carnival traditions remain after 99 storied years

Winter Carnival weekend has become an integral part of the Dartmouth experience over the past 99 years, and it all began with an article in The Dartmouth. Fred Harris, a member of the class of 1911, altered College history when he penned a December 7, 1909 letter to the editor requesting "a meet or field day during February." In the letter, Harris imagined a winter field holiday that would rival the excitement associated with other fall and spring events. The first "Winter Meet" was held in late Februrary of 1910, just two months after the letter's publication, marking the beginning of nearly one hundred years of ski jumps, hiking and outdoor festivities. Harris, however, almost missed this first event, because his dorm, South Fayerweather Hall, was damaged by fire the night before the Winter Meet.

Posters now valued as collector's items

Freshly-fallen snow, skiers hurtling down the trails of Dartmouth Skiway and the giant snow sculpture on the Green are all iconic images of Winter Carnival, but the face of the February weekend has long been the annual Winter Carnival poster. Past posters detail the unique themes of each Winter Carnival, often featuring skiers, ice skaters and smiling students, sketched in the familiar shades of Dartmouth green.

'Carnival' cowriter recalls College visit

In what F. Scott Fitzgerald would later call "one of the silliest mistakes I ever made," the renowned author and recovering alcoholic visited campus in 1939 for an infamous weekend of drunken revelry while attempting to research for a screenplay about the College's Winter Carnival with co-author Budd Schulberg '36. Hollywood producer Walter Wanger, a member of the class of 1915, originally gave Schulberg the task of writing the 'Winter Carnival' movie in the fall of 1938, according to an article in a 1939 issue of The Dartmouth.

Counterpoint: Sculpture and the Seven

While the Dartmouth Seven is a firmly agreed-upon tradition that students learn of early on in our illustrious careers at the College (I heard about it from an '07 frat boy during Orientation, shortly before he invited me to check Blitz in his room), there is a slight problem -- no one ever wrote down the exact places or any guidelines, and Wikipedia is depressingly silent on the issue. Sure, the concept is simple: have sex in seven places, make sure someone calls you out at meetings to highlight your massive legit-ness, and brag about it.
