Possibilities for Green Key Weekend entertainment exist beyond the traditional debauchery of Webster Avenue, according to directors of various non-Greek campus organizations that have planned activities for the weekend.
The Dartmouth Outing Club hosts its annual All-DOC Day on the Thursday afternoon of Green Key Weekend each year, according to DOC President Rebecca Vogel '11. The celebration, which included activities such as grilling and axe-throwing, took place on Massachusetts Row. Vogel said that DOC members selected the celebration's central location in the hope that it would contribute to high attendance.
"Because it's [on] Massachusetts Row, people are coming by all the time," she said.
The DOC does not plan to hold any Green Key-specific activities over the weekend itself, Vogel said, though sub-groups within the DOC will hold regularly scheduled events, such as spring trips.
These trips will include kayaking, climbing and overnights at cabins, among other options, she said.
The Handel Society will perform three separate musical works -- Samson, Requiem for the Fallen and Last Letter Home -- at its spring concert on Saturday evening, according to Robert Duff, director of the Handel Society and Chamber Singers and a music professor at the College.
Samson is a 1743 piece by George Frideric Handel, while Requiem for the Fallen and Last Letter Home are both contemporary works, Duff said. The three pieces all focus on war, he said, a theme that will set the performance apart from most Green Key Weekend festivities.
"The tie-in with Green Key [Weekend] is actually a challenge," Duff said. "[It] is as a...challenge to examine what's great about life and to respect those that had to make more difficult choices."
The show will begin at 8 p.m. in Spaulding Auditorium and will feature a pre-performance discussion with Jonathan Leshnoff, the composer of Requiem for the Fallen, at 6 p.m., according to a pamphlet distributed by the Handel Society.
While most Big Green athletic teams are out of season or traveling this weekend, the Dartmouth co-ed sailing team will host its alumni regatta on Saturday.
The Dartmouth Film Society plans to screen three separate movies over Green Key Weekend, according to DFS Director A.J. Fox '09. Fox is a member of The Dartmouth Senior Staff.
The DFS screens movies regularly, and the films are not geared specifically toward Green Key Weekend, Fox said.
"I would like to think all of our movies are special," he said.
"Alone Across Australia/Asiemut," "Gomorrah" and "Across the Universe" will screen on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively, according to the DFS website.
Fox noted that the screenings will occur early in the evening and that students will have ample time to attend them and still enjoy other activities later in the night.
"I don't think it should be a problem to go the movies before a night of revelry," Fox said.
