DHMC plans reduced services due to state tax

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and other New Hampshire hospitals are bracing for sweeping budget and service cuts in accordance with the new state budget, which went into effect July 1 and included higher tax rates on Medicaid reimbursement. These cuts will likely arise even in light of a federal lawsuit that DHMC and nine other hospitals filed against the state on July 25.

Campus hosts cyber security events

Dartmouth's Institute for Security, Technology and Society co-hosted "Securing the eCampus 2011: Building a Culture of Information Security in an Academic Institution" along with Peter Kiewit Computing Services on July 19-20, according to ISTS associate director Thomas Candon. The fifth annual conference brought together chief information officers and chief information security officers from many universities to discuss ways to protect research data, as well as other information security issues.

Prof. Brooks earns historic tenure

ASHLEY BLUM / The Dartmouth Staff Government professor Deborah Brooks became an associate professor at the College on July 1, making her the first female junior faculty member to attain tenure in the government department in 18 years. Brooks, whose past research has focused on public opinion, polling, campaign advertising, and the role of gender in politics, is currently finalizing a book "He Runs, She Runs: Gender Stereotypes, Double Standards, and Political Campaigns" that has been accepted for publication by Princeton University Press and will be released in 2012. Two other female faculty members in the government department Linda Fowler and Lisa Baldez already have tenure, but they were hired at the senior level and received tenure in Dartmouth's government department at the time of hire. After earning her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1993, Brooks went on to earn her Ph.D.

BlitzMail email client changed this summer

This summer, Dartmouth students began the transition from the long-established BlitzMail email client to the new Microsoft Office 365 suite, a transition that will continue throughout the 2011-2012 academic year.

SmartChoice to replace dining plan

The incoming Class of 2015 will be the first group of freshmen to experience this year's changes to Dartmouth's dining system, which include the renovated Class of 1953 Commons and the new SmartChoice meal plan. The Class of 1953 Commons, formerly Thayer Dining Hall, has been under construction since Winter term 2011, but is on schedule to be completed by this Fall term. The new dining area will feature various types of seating on the upstairs floors, including booths, circular tables and rectangular tables, according to director of dining services David Newlove.

DHMC infection rates drop relative to nation

A new report by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services shows that health-care-associated infections at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center are lower than the national average and have decreased significantly in the last year. DHMC's improved from 36 percent below the national average in 2009 to 64 percent below the average in 2010.

Fall calendar will change in 2012

Beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year, Fall term will start on Sept. 10 and end before Thanksgiving in order for final examinations to conclude before Thanksgiving break.
