N.H. squad wins Shrine game

|

A squad of New Hampshire high-school football stars crushed rival Vermont 41-14 in the 51st annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl held before 10,807 fans at Memorial Field on Saturday. En route to victory, Mike Boyle of Plymouth, N.H., broke a 26-year-old Shrine game rushing record. The 5'-9" 165 lb.

Four recent grads test research on NASA's zero-gravity plane

Through a series of parabolic arcs aboard a NASA aircraft, four recent Dartmouth graduates experienced hours of weightlessness to experiment their solutions to muscle atrophy, the most common physiological problem astronauts experience in space. Inspired by the work of 1998 space shuttle Columbia crewmember and Dartmouth medicine professor Jay Buckey, Stephanie Feldman '04 recruited three classmates to submit a weightless atmosphere research proposal to NASA's Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program.

Altman to bring angst back to Lone Pine Tavern

Most famous for the hit theme song "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" as a member of the group Rockapella, Sean Altman will soon bring his catchy voice to Lone Pine Tavern. Celebrated for his part on the popular children's television program, Altman, who will perform at Dartmouth on August 22, describes his music as contemporary rock and cites the Beatles and the Beach Boys as his greatest musical influences.

Native Americans receive admissions focus

In an attempt to solve the growing problem of a steadily declining Native American college population, one summer program recently invited 50 Native American high-school students to receive an in-depth workshop about the college application process. College Horizons, a five-day institute hosted at Carleton College this year, boasted representatives from 21 of the country's most selective colleges, including Dartmouth. The program aimed to teach students how to search for colleges, write an attention-grabbing essay, produce an impressive resume of academic and extracurricular achievements, master an interview and fill out financial aid forms among other activities.

On Thursday evening, a typical night at Baker-Berry Library ended up being a seminal moment of Sophomore summer for those lucky enough to have a front row seat. An unidentified middle-aged man, approximately 35 years old, according to sources, settled down into a Dell reference terminal on the first floor of Berry Library, adjacent to the reference desk.

Casey Cramer '04 signs with Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Casey Cramer '04 did Saturday what every kid who ever tries to throw a perfect spiral or strap on a pair of Pop Warner shoulder pads dreams of when he signed on the dotted line with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a stellar four-year career as a wide receiver for the Big Green, the Bucs drafted Cramer in the seventh and final round of April's NFL Draft.
