N.H. squad wins Shrine game

A squad of New Hampshire high-school football stars crushed rival Vermont 41-14 in the 51st annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl held before 10,807 fans at Memorial Field on Saturday.

En route to victory, Mike Boyle of Plymouth, N.H., broke a 26-year-old Shrine game rushing record.

The 5'-9" 165 lb. back posted 206 yards on 11 carries on the day.

With 10,807 fans at the game, the Shrine Bowl was the best attended sporting event held at Memorial Field during the College's current academic year.

About 8,100 fans attended Dartmouth's Homecoming football game against the Columbia Lions in October 2003.

Most students interviewed by The Dartmouth said that although they did not go to the game, they observed, at least in passing, the Shriners' parade that preceded the event.

During the parade, members of the Shrine, a Masonic order founded in 1872 that consists of approximately 500,000 men, marched around downtown Hanover and around the Green. Many of the Shriners also wore the order's trademark Fez cap.

Some paraded in miniature replica cars, others in circa-1960s convertibles.

The parade caused traffic delays in and around the Hanover area.
