Puzzling Assumptions

To the Editor:

I do not know why Kate Gilbert is ranting and raving about sexual assualt (The Dartmouth, August 3) in response to Alex Tonelli's editorial. This is completely irrelevant. Nowhere in the editorial did Alex imply that sexual assault and alcohol use go hand in hand.

What he did imply is consensual sexual activity and alcohol use go hand in hand. That is what is meant by the phrase, "you saw a girl walk out of a party with a boy after two beers." I think if Alex meant to imply sexual assault he would have said something along the lines of, "If you saw a boy tugging a girl out of a party after giving her two beers." How Ms. Gilbert assumed that Alex was talking about sexual assault puzzles me.
