Summerfest set for coming weekend

Tubestock may have come and gone, but sophomores can look forward to another day of festivities as two student-sponsored parties on Aug. 7 hope to provide one more daylong celebration this summer.

Summer Carnival, sponsored by Programming Board, will take over Webster Avenue from 1 to 5 p.m., while the Half Way to Graduation Party, sponsored by the 2006 Class Council, will follow the Carnival on the Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity lawn from 7 to 10 p.m.

Students can look forward to an abundance of activities, food and student performances all day Saturday. During the Summer Carnival, sophomores can wander from the Chi Gam barbecue to t-shirt tie dying next door at Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority.

Undergraduates will also be able to enjoy carnival attractions such as a large inflatable obstacle course, which will be placed on the lawn between Bones Gate and Zeta Psi fraternities. Furthermore, a dunk tank and a High Striker -- the game where participants use a mallet to hit an object as high as possible -- will add to the carnival atmosphere on The Tabard coed fraternity's lawn.

"We're planning on barbecuing for everyone who shows up. We want most of the '06 class to come out," Programming Board chair Ben Waters '06 said.

After the daytime Summer Carnival activities conclude, students still have the opportunity for more food and entertainment at the Half Way to Graduation Party at Chi Gam.

The party, which will be catered by Panera, will host performances by several student groups including SHEBAlite, the Dog Day Players, Casual Thursday, Summer Phonics and other student musical groups.

This string of performances will not mark the end of the festivities, as the band Zox will perform at Tabard at 10 p.m. According to Waters, the band, which has performed at the college several times in the past, is back by popular demand for their "high energy rock music." Organizers also plan to serve a midnight breakfast catered by Everything But Anchovies at 10 p.m.

"Tubestock was summer's big event but it attracts people during the day and they do their own thing," 2006 Class Council President Ben Schwartz said. "We hope people come out all day. Between food, friends and Webster Avenue, hopefully they'll find something they can't find elsewhere."

While Webster Avenue will not be blocked off during the festivities, Waters agreed that the location of the parties should help draw people to the events.

"I think that having it on Webster Avenue will get a lot of people living in houses to come as well as help spread the word," Waters said.

While the Half Way to Graduation Party is an original 2006 Class Council event, Summer Carnival has occurred every summer in recent years.

According to Program Board Advisor Mike McKenna, Summer Carnival has occurred every year for the past few years, but its format varies depending on how much the students of each class put into the event.

In the event of rain, the Summer Carnival will be held in Collis Common Ground and the Halfway to Graduation Party will move inside to the first floor of Chi Gam.
