Students vie for UGA jobs despite relatively low pay

Dartmouth undergraduate advisors may be paid less than those holding comparable positions at several other institutions, but that hasn't stopped a record number of students from applying for the position. The 168 current UGAs are expected to work 15 to 20 hours a week, according to their job contracts.

Carnival movie: a project of history, tradition and chaos

Courtesy of the Dartmouth College L:ibrary Beyond denoting the weekend of celebration in which Dartmouth students partake each February, the term "Winter Carnival" is also the title of a movie, lesser known than its eponymous festivities but no less a part of Dartmouth history.

Police, Safety and Security prepare for winter parties

While Dartmouth students look forward to Winter Carnival as a momentary escape from academia, Safety and Security and the Hanover Police see a need to gear up for a weekend traditionally made dangerous by heavy drinking and freezing temperatures. "We are concerned because we do anticipate there will be a lot of people consuming alcohol, and this affects people differently in this weather," Kinne said, predicting the weekend high temperature to be around 18 degrees. Up to three Safety and Security foot patrols will be placed strategically around campus to monitor the well being of Dartmouth students during the festivities.

Counseling wait-time decreases at Dick's House

The wait to schedule counseling appointments at Dick's House has improved since a College review in May 2005 called for a reduction in wait times. According to Mark Reed, director of counseling and health resources, the current wait for a counseling appointment is eight to ten business days, reduced from the three- to four-week appointment delay students complained of in an article in The Dartmouth in 2005, "Students seeking counseling encounter four-week wait." Reed attributes the decrease in wait time to the hiring of new staff and improvements in the appointment system. Each year, approximately 1,000 students seek counseling help at Dick's House, Reed said.

Antique Carnival posters fetch high prices at auction

While some alumni and members of the Dartmouth Community hold on to the days of their Winter Carnivals simply through memories, others have gone the route of collecting more substantial memoirs such as classic Carnival posters. These posters, which commemorate each year's theme, are often valuable and expensive antiques. Students may recognize these valuable commodities as they hang in the halls of Thayer Dining Hall and Collis Center. Poster prices vary widely depending on their year and condition. Older posters that are in good condition can typically go for around $2,000 at auction houses.

Themes, drinking and fatigue: Winter Carnival, that is

Theme-picking is never an easy task. Winter Carnival is no exception; choosing a theme for such a nebulously defined festival is especially tricky. This year's theme, "Down the Rabbit Hole", references the first chapter of Lewis Carroll's iconic "Alice in Wonderland." The obvious psychedelic underpinnings of the novel got me thinking about the true nature of Winter Carnival and its function. The entire idea of the "carnivalesque" revolves around social inversion and pageantry.
