Dartmouth Skiway hosts races, offers 99 cent lift tickets

Winter Carnival weekend festivities at the Dartmouth Skiway include a 99 cent price for ski passes, Dartmouth ski team races and an intramural ski race. The Skiway is exceptionally geared-up for this year's events in its 50th anniversary year.

With valid Dartmouth identification., the Skiway will be open at the 99 cent price from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. today, as a part of this weekend's Carnival activities. The Dartmouth Skiway and 99 Rock will be co-sponsoring this event. While the lift ticket is discounted, if you don't own skis, you will still have to pay $25 to rent skis or a snowboard. Many skiers who don't usually make it to the Skiway are very excited for the day off from classes and the cheap lift ticket.

"It was such a pain to drag my snowboard through the airport on my way back from winter break. I haven't even gotten a chance to use it yet. This is a great chance to ski all day with my friends, who all seem to be in the same "no time to make it to the Skiway" situation," Ann Elise DeBelina '10 said.

In addition to leisure skiing, Dartmouth will host its annual Carnival ski races. The men's and women's slalom races are today and Saturday at the Skiway.

This year's races will be a little different than usual. Dartmouth will host two slalom events rather than one, and also will host giant slalom. There will be one race on Friday which consists of two timed runs, and then another race on Saturday which also consists of two timed runs.

The races start at 9:30 a.m. with the Women's Giant Slalom, followed by the Women's 10K Classic at 10:00 a.m. The Men's Giant Slalom will begin at 10:30 followed by the Men's 20K Classic at 11:30. Both classic races will take place at the Trapp Family Lodge. The second Giant Slalom races take place in the afternoon.

The women start at 1 p.m. and the men at 2 p.m. On Saturday the Men's Slalom begins at 9:30 followed by the Men's 3x5 Free Style Relay. The women begin their slalom race at 10:30 with their 3x5 Free Style Relay following. The Free Style Relays will be at the Trapp Family Lodge. In the afternoon the Men's Slalom second round will begin at 12:30 and the women's at 1:30. The Carnival will conclude with the Slalom and Giant Slalom Awards at 2:45 at the Dartmouth Skiway.

The typical race crowd is around 100 family members and 30 students. The ski team has found it difficult to bring students out to the races.
