Debate weighs morality of atheism, Christianity

|

Andy Foust / The Dartmouth Staff Arguments over the relationship between God and morality gripped a crowd of approximately 400 students and community members during "Can we be good without God?," a debate between conservative writer Dinesh D'Souza '83 and Dartmouth philosophy professor Walter Sinnott-Armstrong held in Alumni Hall Monday night. Armstrong contended that belief in the existence of God is not necessary for universal morality to exist.

Toe to Toe: Hodes versus Schmidley (Schmidley)

Best Available Player: Darren McFadden, RB Arkansas. It's been an eventful and highly public off-season for the former Hog superstar, who has been labeled everything from a "can't miss prospect" to a "shaky character guy" to a "pure burner" with a number of other redeeming qualities for NFL play.

Toe to Toe: Hodes versus Schmidley (Hodes)

Best Available Player: Glenn Dorsey, DT Louisiana State University. While Schmidley will certainly make a compelling case for Darren McFadden, a man sure to turn beast in the NFL, we should not be blinded by skill positions.

Crew roundup: Photo finish gives lightweights Biglin Bowl

|

The Dartmouth men's lightweight crew team had a historic victory on Saturday, as the Big Green won the Biglin Bowl over Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the fourth time in the 59-year history of the event. The varsity eight boat made up a deficit of a boatlength in the final 500 meters of the race, defeating the Crimson in a photo finish. It was also the first time in Biglin Bowl history that both the varsity and the second varsity boats for Dartmouth were victorious. The varsity eight boat won in a time of five minutes and 51.8 seconds, just edging out the Crimson, which clocked in at 5:51.85. The second varsity eight bested its Harvard counterpart crew by two and a half seconds, with a time of 6:05.6. Commodore David Smith '08 was happy about the victory, but not fully satisfied with the team's performance. "It's hard to be satisfied if you have to come up on a crew from behind and bring it up to even," Smith said. For the first 500 meters of the race, both boats were even.

Not All Good In The Hood

|

After many discussions on the topic, I am moved to respond to the Hood Museum's recent event, "Hip-Hop in the Hood." The party was meant to celebrate the opening of its new exhibit, "Black Womanhood: Images, Icons, and Ideologies of the African Body." Instead, it served to commodify and objectify the very group of women it claimed to represent. First, I should say that I love the artwork in the "Black Womanhood" exhibit.
