Track and field dominates in first oudoor home meet

In a four-team field, the men's and women's track and field teams combined to take 27 first-place finishes in 38 events in Hanover on Saturday.
In a four-team field, the men's and women's track and field teams combined to take 27 first-place finishes in 38 events in Hanover on Saturday.

Both Big Green squads stomped the competition across the board, seizing first place in 27 of 38 events.

The men's team took the day with a score of 120 points, trailed by UNH with 61 points, UVM with 19 points and Middlebury with seven points. The women ran the table with a winning score of 118 points while UVM placed second with 38 points, Middlebury third with 33 points and UNH fourth with 18 points.

"The meet went extremely well, to say the least," men's head coach Barry Harwick '77 said. "We won quite easily, though this was not unexpected. The fact that our athletes have all been working so hard in practice and the beautiful weather combined to make everything fall into place."

The men's team won 13 of its 18 events. For the second week in a row, the highlight of the meet was Brian Evans '08's performance -- Evans was victorious in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes with times of 10.85 seconds and 21.77 seconds, respectively. Evans also served as anchor for the 4 x 100-meter relay team, which sprinted to a decisive victory in 41.78 seconds.

Muhammed Abdul-Shakoor '10 also broke 11 seconds in the 100-meter dash, placing second with a time of 10.99 seconds.

Julian Thomas '09 won the 400-meter dash in 49.20 seconds, rounding out a strong performance from Dartmouth's sprinters.

Dartmouth took second, third, and fourth in the men's 800-meter race as Tom Robbins '11 led the way with a time of 1:51.24.

Kevin Treadway '10 and Dwayne Alexis '11 ran less than a second apart in the 1500-meter race to secure second and third places in 3:54.19 and 3:54.88, respectively.

Grant Allen '08 was first in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:23.34.

Chris Zablocki '10 won the 5000-meter run by over 30 seconds with a time of 14:56.

Harwick was particularly impressed with his middle distance runners.

"Our middle distance runners in the 800 and 1500 all ran the fastest times of their lives," Harwick said. "It was great for everyone to see that their hard work is paying off and definitely helped to boost confidence while validating everything that they have done in practice."

Dartmouth was also successful in the field events, winning six of eight competitions.

Andrew Ching '10 finished first in the high jump by clearing 1.93 meters.

Tyler Koskenoja '07 led Dartmouth in the long jump with a leap of 6.80 meters as the Big Green took the first four spots in that event.

Randy McKnight '08 dominated the triple jump with a huge winning mark of 14.58 meters.

Dartmouth swept the throwing events as David Irving '11 took the discus throw with a launch of 46.38 meters, Alex Lippai '09 outstripped the competition by over eight meters with a heave of 54.40 meters in the hammer throw and Tim Wunderlich '09 won the javelin with a throw of 59.60 meters.

The Big Green women also dominated the competition on Saturday, cruising to an 80-point victory and scoring three times as many points as the second place team. Dartmouth was victorious in 14 of the 19 events.

The results exceeded women's head coach Sandy Ford-Centonze's expectations.

"I felt confident going in that we probably had the strongest team but did not really expect the score to turn out as decisive as it did," Ford-Centonze said. "We were of course very happy with the results. Many athletes stepped up their performance another notch and recorded new personal records as times keep improving."

The Big Green women ran very well in the sprints and middle distance races. Katie Suchow '08 began the day with a 12.71 second victory in the 100-meter dash and a close second-place finish of 25.89 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

Natalie Stoll '10 and Kaleigh Wood '11 ran one-two in the 400-meter dash with times of 57.02 and 58.39 seconds, respectively. Both contributed to Dartmouth's 10-second victory in the 4 x 400 relay with a time of 3:52.42.

"Our relay teams were so on today," Wood said. "We were all on point and ready to put out a fast time. With the help of our entire team, we got incredibly hyped and went out and did it!"

Dartmouth's 4 x 100 relay team also gave a top-notch performance, taking second place. Its time of 48.79 seconds places the team second on the Big Green all-time list.

"I am very excited for our relay teams going into Heps this year," Ford-Centonze said. "Some teams may have faster individuals but the key to success is minimizing mistakes with the baton, and we have the members to accomplish that."

Caitlin Cunningham '09 posted a six-second victory in the 1500-meter race. She also finished fourth in the 800-meter race, behind Marcy Van Arnam '09, who took second place with a time of 2:17.21.

The Big Green was also victorious in every hurdle and field event.

Dartmouth took four of the top five places in the 100-meter high hurdle race, led by Karen Woolley '09 with a time of 14.79 seconds. She was followed by Cassandre Tanner '08, Victoria Michelotti '08, and Jessica Robson '11, each of whom posted their best times of the year.

Alexandra Tanner '11 and Woolley teamed up to run one-two in the 400m hurdles times of 1:01.88 and 1:02.13, respectively. These times qualify the athletes for the Eastern College Athletic Conference championship.

In the throwing or jumping events Dartmouth carried the day by taking first through sixth place in the long jump. Sarah Klassen '10 and Robson tied for first with jumps of 1.63 meters.

In the pole vault, Erika Graham '08 and Hannah Raila '10 took first and second with leaps of 3.41 meters and 3.35 meters, respectively.

Tanner and Micaela Carwell '08 led the way in the long jump, recording marks of 5.68 and 5.46 meters to place first and second, respectively.

Kristin Kern '10 clinched the triple jump by soaring 10.97 meters.

A different Big Green athlete won each of the four throwing events, demonstrating the depth of the women's team.

"We have really dominated the throwing events over the past few weeks and it was great to have each thrower really step up on Saturday," Ford-Centonze said. "We won every throw with a different person so it was great to share the wealth around a bit."

Emily Daly '09 won the shot put with a toss of 12.87 meters, followed by Tina Alexander '11, with a mark of 12.72 meters.

Alexander went on to claim first place in the discus throw with a launch of 39.10 meters.

"It felt awesome to have everyone score points for the team and really crush the competition," Alexander said.

Jessica Long '08 and Daly were first and second in the hammer throw with impressive marks of 53.77 meters and 52.24 meters, respectively. The next-closest throw was a full six meters lower.

Jaclyn Wypler '11 won the javelin throw by more than a full meter, throwing 40.85 meters for first place to round out the Big Green sweep.

"Overall we have done quite well this season," Long said. "I do think that there is a lot of room for better marks and times but I know that we'll be ready to go when we get to Heps [Heptagonals, the Ivy League championship meet]."

Both track and field teams face busy schedules this week. The world-famous Penn Relays will take place Thursday through Saturday in Philadelphia and the Big Green will host the annual Dartmouth Invitational on Sunday.

"The Penn Relays are some of the most competitive races across the country every year," Harwick said. "The meet consists of hundreds of races, the biggest of which are the Championships of America Relays. We plan to take 25 men and women to the meet to run in relays and individual races while resting the bulk of the team for Sunday's events. I am most excited about our men's distance relay team consisting of four seniors -- Harry Norton '08 , Mike Carmody '08, Charlie Stoebe '08, and Ben True '08."

Dartmouth will also compete in the New England Championship Meet May 8-10 in Durham, N.H., and the Heps Championship Meet on May 10-11 in New Haven, Conn.
