"To stand there and see this whole crowd of people and everybody cheering and to watch the U.S. flag raised, it was a really cool experience," he said in an interview with The Dartmouth. "The wave of emotion was obviously something more intense than anything I've ever experienced before and maybe ever will again."

When I was younger, my mom was one of those moms. You know, the one who put carrot sticks in your lunch instead of cheese doodles, who only let you eat Cocoa Puffs on your birthday and who always got mad at you for trying to sneak Lunchables into the grocery cart. As a result, going over to a friend's house for me was akin to entering a treasure trove of snacks and goodies I had only seen from afar on a grocery store shelf or in one of those clich TV commercials that inevitably involved a talking animal. In fact, I always looked forward to going over to this one friend's house in particular because as soon as we walked through the door, her mother would be waiting for us with a hot plate of Bagel Bites every child's most coveted after-school snack. While I eventually grew out of my obsession with all things processed, frozen and pre-packaged, I still crave a Bagel Bite every so often. So this week, I have located that small part of my childhood in Collis, where I have found a way to create everyone's favorite: the pizza bagel.

Editor's Note: This week, we asked The Mirror's DDS Detective to take a break from her usual food-detecting and explain what, as a '13, she expects from Winter Carnival. Her conclusion? It cannot be done.

Charlotte Williams '13 may be new to the Dartmouth women's swimming and diving team, but early success in the pool has not been elusive for the freshman.

"I think we definitely could have done better," co-captain Catherine Armstrong '10 said. "People weren't swimming close to the times they had done two days before."

There is this off-the-beaten-path joint about an hour from my house called Sweet Georgia Brown's. And while Ms. Brown could probably have done a better job making the exterior look less like a glorified trailer home, she makes peach cobbler that could entice people like me to skip last period and drive 50 miles for my soul food fix. Unfortunately, with the exception of FoCo's pretty meager attempts at soul food nights, Dartmouth is about as far off the Soul Train as it gets. As a native Southerner, I spent several meals dreaming about that cobbler and wishing Sweet Georgia would come to her senses already and set up shop in Hanover.

"It was really exciting to see people step up Saturday morning and really turn it on," women's co-captain Catherine Armstrong '10 said. "You could tell that people were really amped on swimming well and we were excited to see [them] do so well."

The music business has its groupies and the Twitter scene calls out to followers, but the biggest fans of Dartmouth sports are most commonly called devoted parents and there is no shortage of loyal athletes' parents making extraordinary efforts to attend as many of their children's Big Green sporting events as possible.

Walking into Collis to see what soups have been cooked up that day is like checking your sent blitzes' folder the morning after an especially rage-y night you never really know what you are going to get. But one cannot ignore the fact that one bowl of delicious Collis soup is sometimes not enough to tide you over for several hours. The solution? Creamy rice: a dish that has all the flavor of Collis soup, fills you up for a long time and in keeping with the DDS Detective's mantra, is super easy to make. 1. Get a small cup of Collis Soup NOTE: Only use this recipe for non-creamy soups (i.e. no chowders, cream of vegetable and/or soups with butter)2. Ask for a small cup of rice 3. Get a small cup of plain yogurt from the fridge4. Pour the soup on top of the rice such that the rice isn't drowning in the soup, but evenly coated.5. Add a dollop or two of plain yogurt to the soup/rice blend and mix

Many of us Dartmouth students, especially those non-New Englanders, view Boston as a means of getting to Hanover. It's a pit-stop, a layover. We've been to Boston plenty of times, but our "visit" only seems to consist of the ten steps it takes to walk from the doors of Boston Logan to the Dartmouth Coach. But, as one of the easiest cities to get to from Hanover, Beantown is the perfect location for a quick weekend getaway in order to take advantage of all the great sights the historical city has to offer. There are almost as many places to see as there are grains of sand at Homeplate beach night, but here's a rundown of some of the basics.

Against Yale (6-1, 4-0 Ivy) and Penn (3-4, 3-4 Ivy), Serpico maintained her winning streak in women's diving by taking first in the one-meter and three-meter events with scores of 249.35 and 278.15, respectively.

In this recession-ridden era, it is easy to ignore what is going on and treat your DBA like monopoly money. Most students don't think twice about getting a $13 Pavilion salmon for every meal or grabbing $20 worth of sushi at Collis Late Night.

There are several inventions that I really define as turning points in humanity: fire, the telephone, the light bulb and mankind's pice de rsistance: Nutella. If you are one of those people who had an unfortunate childhood deprived of this delicious innovation, Nutella is essentially a chocolate-hazelnut spread that you can put on just about anything. Unfortunately, Dartmouth Dining Services dropped the ball and somehow does not have it at any of its dining locations.

Only a few short weeks ago, all Dartmouth students logged onto Banner to check their fall quarter grades. Some were greeted by an unexpected A- in the Bio 11 class that they never seemed to be able to wake up for, while a fair amount of students were met with a disappointing C in the so-called "introductory" art history class that they thought would be an easy A.

In these penny-pinching times, the DDS Detective is always on the lookout for delicious yet cost-effective meals and this week, she hit the jackpot. Think recession meets fiesta and you get what is sure to be an instant crowd-pleaser: 85-cent quesadillas. While they may not be exactly like your abuela used to make, they will surely delight that South-of-the-border taste bud that Dartmouth has never truly been able to please. (Gusanoz doesn't count.)1. Go to the Home Plate sandwich line and ask for a tortilla with 2-3 slices of cheese on one half 2. Have the tortilla folded in half and pressed in the Panini press 3. Finally, use that mysterious taco-bar-with-no-tacos past the register and top your quesadilla with salsa or sour cream

The women's diving team, however, had one of the best weekends of the season thus far, with Erica Serpico '12, Kate O'Brien '13 and Kathleen Brady '10 taking the top three spots, respectively, in the one-meter and three-meter diving events against the Catamounts (8-4, 2-3 America East). On Sunday, Serpico once again won both diving events, setting a new pool record in the one-meter dive with 296.29 points.

They put enough sauce on Collis stir-fry to fill a small tub. The alfredo sauce in the pasta bar has a tendency to taste like Cheez-whiz. And worst of all, when you do want one of those classic Collis specialties, you can never make up your mind and usually end up defaulting to Foco and ordering your usual Spicy Russian, which we all know doesn't bode well for that bikini-bod you are hoping to show off on the Green this spring.

This year, the team traveled to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the first two weeks of winter break for intensive training. The team practiced outdoors and swam longer courses than usual, according to coach Jim Wilson.

"We had a tough meet yesterday with Brown and Navy," men's and women's teams head coach Jim Wilson said. "That took a little out of us, but the overall goal [against Colgate] was to stay [focused] from swimming hard yesterday, and for the most part, we accomplished it."

In this weekend's season opener, both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Cornell and Harvard, despite posting a few strong individual performances.
