Pushing the pause button

Sometimes I wish there was a pause button on the remote control of life. Part of the problem of going to a school like Dartmouth is that we live our lives at such breakneck speeds that we never stop to truly appreciate what we have.

Devens' death ruled a suicide

Essex Police Inspector Donald Wolfe said yesterday the Massachusetts state medical examiner has ruled the death of Sarah Devens '96a suicide. Devens, a three-sport varsity athlete at the College, shot herself Monday afternoon at her home in Essex, Mass.

Alums run summer info booth

Spending eight hours a day in an information booth may seem like a boring way to spend the summer. But then, appearances can be deceiving. "We joke that this is the best job in town," said Jay Evans '49, who has worked in the information booth for the past five summers.

Fox now on cable

Dartmouth students can watch their favorite National Football League teams on Sunday afternoons and "Melrose Place" on Monday nights this fall. Twin State Cable, which provides cable service to the College and the Upper Valley, has added the Fox television network to its basic cable service.

Network to change

Students living in New Hampshire Hall, and the Fayerweathers and Choates dormitory clusters will be able to connect more easily to a new high-speed wire to acess electronic mail and other network services by the start of Fall term. Larry Levine, the College's director of computing services, said installation of the new wires &emdash; called Ethernet &emdash; in the Fayerweathers and the Choates that is going on now should be completed by September. Currently, students can have Kiewit run Ethernet wires through walls into their rooms for $125.
