Women's cross country ranked 13th in nation

Living up to their high pre-season national ranking, the women's cross country team continues to build upon last year's successes behind the strong nucleus of Meegan Larsen '95, Kristin Cobb '95 and Maribel Sanchez '96 and are now ranked as the country's 13th best, a position shared with rival Cornell. Coach Ellen O'Neil described the team as "more excited than nervous" about their national standing. She noted that an Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship and qualifying for the NCAAs remain the team's ultimate goals this year, as well as improving on last year's fifth place finish at the Heptagonal Championship. "If we keep running as we have been, and improving as we have with each race, I think we have a very good chance," Captain Tori Knox '94 said.

Women's soccer improves with age

Consolation was not the order of the day for the Big Green as the horn blast that ended the women's soccer team's 2-1 overtime loss to the University of Connecticut echoed over Chase Field, Saturday. Maybe a year or two ago, Coach Steve Swanson would have been quick with praise for what was otherwise an outstanding performance against the Northeast Region's second-ranked team. These days, though, the women's soccer program has moved beyond picking up style points and putting up a good fight against the top teams. "We've gotten to the point where there are no more moral losses," Swanson said.

Men's soccer wins; LeGere '95 scores in second half

The Big Green men's soccer team defeated the University of Vermont yesterday at Chase Field in Dartmouth's exciting home opener, 1-0. The game's only goal belonged to Co-Captain Blaine LeGere '95 when at the 51-minute mark of the game, LeGere intercepted a Vermont pass, sidestepped a slipping defender and fired a 25-yard, right-footed shot that grazed Catamount defender Brad Bierman's foot en route to the lower left corner of the net. "I was looking for a good strike on the ball," he said.

Football still aiming for title

The sound resonated from Philadelphia to Hanover and wherever Dartmouth football fans found themselves late Saturday afternoon at the conclusion of the Big Green's 10-6 loss to the University of Pennsylvania. It was not a comet, an earthquake or even the construction on Collis. Instead, the thud that shook the Dartmouth football team right to the bottom of its three straight Ivy League titles was the crashing of a lot of lofty expectations for the 1993 season. Men's soccer on tap today

The Big Green men's soccer team hosts the University of Vermont today at Chase Field. Game time is 4 p.m. Dartmouth played its first game of the season on Sunday, recording a 4-1 victory over Providence College. The Big Green hopes to improve on their success of last year when they captured the Ivy League title with a record of six wins and one loss. The 1992 team made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament before losing to the eventual national champion, the University of Virginia, 3-0. The team returns all but two members of last year's squad, including All-Ivy Ian Saward '95 and the 1992 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, David Moran, '96. Moran notched one goal and one assist during the Providence game. As a result of Dartmouth's talent and depth, the ISAA Pre-Season Poll ranked the Big Green 12th in the nation, the only Ivy League school in the top-25. "The problem [with our ranking] is forgetting how we got there," Coach Bobby Clark said.

Football stumbles against Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 18 ' On a quest for a fourth consecutive Ivy League title, the Dartmouth football team started off on the wrong foot today, losing to the University of Pennsylvania,10-6. The Big Green, led by senior captain and quarterback Jay Fiedler, failed to come up with the big plays typical of the past two successful years and were stopped cold by the strong Quaker defense that repeatedly broke through the offensive line. Throughout the steady light rain here, Penn running back Terrance Stokes was like a bad itch, aggravating Dartmouth's defensive line for 124 yards and one touchdown ' a slashing 19-yard run that accounted for Penn's only touchdown of the game at the end of the second quarter. From Dartmouth's first possession on, the Penn defensive line harassed and hurried Fiedler, forcing him to throw early or scramble out of the pocket unprotected where he was sacked and tripped up for losses of yards. While Penn only had 56 more offensive yards than the Big Green, the Quakers dominated on the ground, piling up 151 yards by land to just 34 yards on 33 frustrating carries for Dartmouth, including just eight yards in the first half. Early Lead Penn scored first early in the second quarter off a picturesque 42-yard field goal by Andy Glockner at 12:01.

Hoops coach moves to ASU

Women's basketball coach Jaqueline Hullah left the College last week to become head coach of the women's basketball program at Arizona State University. A search committee, headed by Associate Director of the Intercollegiate Program Jo Ann Harper, is presently reviewing the applications of the four finalists for the position and hopes to namea new women's basketball coach by the beginning of next week, Harper said. "We have conducted a national search and all the candidates are from outside the College," she said. The search committee, comprised of alumni, administrators and coaches, was formed after Hullah announced her resignation at the beginning of July. During her nine years at the College, Hullah led the women's basketball team to five consecutive Ivy League championships from 1986 to 1990.

Alum will coach squash

Christina Schutz Brownell '87, the nation's second ranked women's squash professional, will coach the Big Green's men's and women's squash teams starting this fall. While at Dartmouth, Brownell was a two-time All-Ivy squash player, a three year letter winner and team captain her senior year, but never played before coming to the College. "I learned how to play here," Brownell said.

Students chase baseball games across continent

Lured by dreams of fields, Brent De Riszner '96 and three Princeton juniors are touring across America to see all 28 baseball teams in 28 days. Despite the hectic pace, the road trip did not encounter difficulties until this past Monday, when they reached New York City to see their 19th game of the summer. That night the game scheduled at 7 p.m.

Climbers lobby ORL for an indoor wall

The Dartmouth Mountaineering Club is lobbying the Office of Residential Life for permission to replace a racquetball court in Maxwell Hall with an indoor climbing wall. The club presented its proposal to ORL two weeks ago and the office says it hopes to respond sometime this week. The indoor wall would allow Dartmouth climbers to practice and teach mountaineering skills year-round, during winter and bad weather. The Mountaineering Club, a division of the Outing Club, has been trying to gain approval for an indoor climbing facility for 15 years, according to Director of Outdoor Programs Earl Jette. The club's written proposal states that the availability of indoor climbing is important to the quality of a mountaineering program the size and scope of Dartmouth's. A question of where The club has secured funding for the wall and the proposal states that questions of safety, liability and administrative support have been resolved with the College. According to the proposal, only one issue remains: the location of the wall. Dean of Students Lee Pelton approved the proposal early this term, according to club member Chris Carson '95.

Three lacrosse players make All-American

On weekends throughout the next year, three Dartmouth students will attend All-American Lacrosse practices in the Baltimore area in preparation for a three-week-long world tour in June 1994. During the weekend of June 6th through 8th, two Dartmouth women and one graduate made the All-American Lacrosse Team.

Young alumni win international crew race

Dragseth, Lowell, under Dartmouth coaching, win the gold at the World University Games Nick Lowell '93 and Dave Dragseth '93 won gold medals at the World University Games in Ontario last month when their crew boat rowed to an upset victory for the United States. They were both members of an eight man team coached by Scott Armstrong, Dartmouth's varsity heavyweight coach. Teams from Britain, Canada, France and Germany were all favored to win over the Americans. The British boat took an early lead in the race.

The lesson of Reggie Lewis

We've seen the picture before. The photo was a shot of Boston Celtics' team captain Reggie Lewis, who died Tuesday of cardiac arrest while shooting baskets at Brandeis University, sitting on the floor after collapsing during a playoff game against Charlotte in April. Lewis looked dazed and confused with a "how could this be happening to me?" expression on his face. The picture was splashed across the sports section of every Boston newspaper with the story of the star's fate: he would never play basketball again. Every article, it seemed, described his illness as the heart disease that killed Loyola-Marymount star Hank Gathers in 1990. The pictures were alike, too. The Celtics, under pressure because they allowed Lewis to reenter the Charlotte game for a short time, assembled a team of doctors, which Celtics' Senior Executive Vice President and Dave Gavitt '59 likened to the dream team of cardiology, who ran a diverse battery of tests on the 27-year old All-Star. Their prognosis confirmed that Lewis indeed had cardiomyopathy, a disease that damages the heart and causes it to beat irregularly.

Football team clowns around with kids

Clowns and cotton candy aren't just for kids. On Sunday July 25, a group of Dartmouth football players enjoyed the visiting Big Apple Circus with Upper Valley area children. In the name of Friends of Dartmouth Football, an anonymous alumnus donated 20 circus tickets to the Tucker Foundation. According to Matt Feeley '94, a team member who attended the circus, Friends of Dartmouth Football organized the trip and the team members signed up through the football office. Twenty players took a chartered bus to Lebanon, N.H.
