Bob Bennett '93 on track for the major leagues

A day of practice for Big Green football

The 1993 Big Green football team will begin its quest for Dartmouth's fourth consecutive Ivy League title tomorrow when it will hold its one and only day of spring practice. Current conference regulations permit one day of practice before August but will allow 12 days of practice beginning next year. The team will not practice in full gear, but with helmets only. "We're limited in what can get done without pads," head coach John Lyons said.

A strong start for women's ultimate

The women's ultimate frisbee team came close to qualifying for nationals this weekend at the Ultimate Frisbee Regional Tournament here at Dartmouth. The Frost Heaves, as all Dartmouth ultimate teams are known, went 2-2 over the weekend, losing to Columbia and Brown, but beating UVM and SUNY-Purchase. "We're only four years old," team member Amy Hannah '93 said.

Big Green's baseball final record improves over last year

It's amazing how timing can warp perspective in sports. If the baseball team had only ended the season the way it started it and not the other way around, everyone would talk about the team's great season and how the program was headed on the up-swing and will contend for the Ivy League Title next year. Instead, it was the second half of the season that featured a nine-of-11 losing streak and the first half that saw the team jump out to a promising 10-6 start that filled Big Green baseball fans' heads with delusions of pennants. Make no mistake, the 1993 team was a much improved baseball team from its 1992 season.

Ultimate frisbee hosts tournament

As he walked off Sachem Field with a shirt that looked like the "before" picture in a detergent commercial and clumps of grass and mud clinging to his legs, ultimate frisbee team member Jordan Stern '94 bent down to pick up a rusty length of pipe and a weather-worn, heavily chipped piano leg. "We take them with us wherever we go.

Heavyweights finish seventh

WORCESTER, Mass.--The Big Green varsity heavyweight crew, entering Eastern Sprints on Sunday as the defending champions, had its work cut out when it was placed into a morning heat with undefeated Brown and the University of Pennsylvania, both seeded ahead of Dartmouth. Brown, the number-one seed, coasted across the finish line in five minutes, 42.08 seconds.

Varsity lighweights win Eastern Sprints

WORCESTER, Mass.--At the halfway mark of the 2,000-meter race, the Big Green varsity lightweight crew surged ahead and never looked back, winning the Eastern Sprints Championships yesterday for the first time in history. With the win, the Dartmouth lightweights also won the Jope Cup, an award presented to the school whose lightweight crews score the highest total points on the freshman, second varsity and varsity races.

Heps preview

In the outdoor track season, there are the Heptagonal Championships and nothing else. That weekend has arrived for the men and women's track teams as they prepare to head off to Brown for the Heps. "This is the meet that is really the measure of our success," Coach Carl Wallin said. The Heps are the first - and only - scoring meet for both teams this season and include all eight Ivy League teams along with Army and Navy. While Navy, the indoor winner, is the favorite, both Dartmouth teams will probably finish within the top half of the competition. The strength for both teams, as always, is in the middle and long distance events and the throwing events. Jon Fidelak '93, Mike Hughes '93, Dennis Webster '93 and Aaron Culliney '96 combined to win the 4x800-meter relay at Heps this winter.

Golfers invited to NCAA regionals

For the first time in school history, two women will represent Dartmouth on the national level in golf when they compete at the NCAA East Regional Championship, May 13-15 in Baton Rouge, La. Seniors Tracy Welch and Sarah Davis are among 12 individuals invited to compete along with 18 teams.

NCAA tourney game for women's lacrosse

For the second time in history, the Big Green women's lacrosse team will participate in the NCAA Tournament. The Big Green was invited to the six-team field after posting marks of 11-3 overall and 4-2 in the Ivy League this season. Dartmouth's only other trip to the tournament was in 1983 when the Big Green lost to Princeton, 12-10 in the first round. Dartmouth will face Harvard in Cambridge, Ma.

Women's tennis ends season

When the women's tennis team looks back on the 1993 season, there will be no mistaking that it added its own unique chapter to the history of the program. But it's the history yet to come that makes the Big Green's second-place finish in the Ivy League and 5-2 league record not only a proud piece of the team's heritage but also a tantalizing morsel of what is to come for the team. Next year's squad will lose only one member to graduation and adds four regionally and nationally-ranked recruits to a talented line-up. "If they develop the way that I think they will, we're going to have depth like you've never seen," Coach Chris Kerr said. Still, no one is thinking it is going to be easy to replace Ali Boss '93, the team's captain and first singles players.
