Football faces UNH

In a season when the Dartmouth football team has had a tough enough time picking on teams its own size, the University of New Hampshire represents a somewhat daunting challenge. The Wildcats are bigger, stronger, faster -- superlatives that generally confer a hefty advantage in any sports, let alone football. But no one is counting Dartmouth out of Saturday's game, which kicks off at 1:30 p.m.

Ivy matches begin for volleyball

After an 0-7 start, the women's volleyball team heads into official Ivy League competition this weekend in what could be its most difficult road trip of the season. The women will play Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania, two of the stronger teams in the league. Last year, the team finished 10-12 overall with a 1-8 Ivy League record that placed them seventh in the Ancient Eight for the second straight year.

Women's rugby club aims for victories

As the leaves change colors and fall around the green fields of Sachem, the Dartmouth women's rugby club practices their rucks, mauls, scrums, line outs, and quick passing in preparation for the fall of their New England competitors. The home game against the University of Vermont two weeks ago began the season with a roar as Nicole Carrier '94 took off after a bold series of grub kicks by Keirsten Lawton '94 for a diving try.

Women's soccer defeats Yale

The women's soccer team extended their winning streak to four games with a 1-0 victory over Yale on Saturday in New Haven, Conn. Annalisa Gorman '94 provided the scoring punch for the Big Green, sending a sharp left-footed volley into the net off a cross from Mya Mangawang '95.

Women's cross country ranked 13th in nation

Living up to their high pre-season national ranking, the women's cross country team continues to build upon last year's successes behind the strong nucleus of Meegan Larsen '95, Kristin Cobb '95 and Maribel Sanchez '96 and are now ranked as the country's 13th best, a position shared with rival Cornell. Coach Ellen O'Neil described the team as "more excited than nervous" about their national standing. She noted that an Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship and qualifying for the NCAAs remain the team's ultimate goals this year, as well as improving on last year's fifth place finish at the Heptagonal Championship. "If we keep running as we have been, and improving as we have with each race, I think we have a very good chance," Captain Tori Knox '94 said.

Women's soccer improves with age

Consolation was not the order of the day for the Big Green as the horn blast that ended the women's soccer team's 2-1 overtime loss to the University of Connecticut echoed over Chase Field, Saturday. Maybe a year or two ago, Coach Steve Swanson would have been quick with praise for what was otherwise an outstanding performance against the Northeast Region's second-ranked team. These days, though, the women's soccer program has moved beyond picking up style points and putting up a good fight against the top teams. "We've gotten to the point where there are no more moral losses," Swanson said.

Men's soccer wins; LeGere '95 scores in second half

The Big Green men's soccer team defeated the University of Vermont yesterday at Chase Field in Dartmouth's exciting home opener, 1-0. The game's only goal belonged to Co-Captain Blaine LeGere '95 when at the 51-minute mark of the game, LeGere intercepted a Vermont pass, sidestepped a slipping defender and fired a 25-yard, right-footed shot that grazed Catamount defender Brad Bierman's foot en route to the lower left corner of the net. "I was looking for a good strike on the ball," he said.
