Hockey loses two on road

The men's hockey team played two very different games this past weekend against conference opponents Union and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, but unfortunately for the Big Green, each contest had an identical result -- Dartmouth losses. The Big Green dropped a 6-2 decision to the Union Skating Dutchmen on Friday night and were defeated by the RPI Engineers by a 5-1 margin on Saturday night. The two losses drop the squad's overall mark to 0-3-1, with an 0-2 record in the ECAC. In dropping the back-to-back decisions, the Big Green wasted standout performances from many of the freshmen on the squad, including Matt Giedt '99 and Scott Peach '99, each of whom scored their first collegiate goals over the weekend. But ultimately it was an anemic offense -- totalling only three goals over two games -- that did the Big Green in.

Men's hockey takes to the road for first two conference games

After a disappointing opening weekend that saw the men's hockey team earn a tie and a loss against the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames, the squad is looking for its first win of the young season as regular season conference play begins in earnest this weekend. The Big Green will play ECAC road games tonight against the Union Skating Dutchmen in Schenectady, N.Y., and tomorrow night against the RPI Engineers at Troy, N.Y. Coach Roger Demment and the players said a strong commitment to defense will be necessary for the team to be successful this weekend. The squad's newly installed defensive-minded system was quite effective last Friday night, holding UIC to only three goals, but the defense came unraveled during the Saturday nightcap, resulting in eight goals allowed. "It is going to take nearly flawless defense to beat RPI and Union," goalie Ben Heller '97 said.

Football aims for 6th in a row

The Dartmouth football team is on fire and the Big Green do not look as if they are about to let up heading into the last two weeks of the season. If everything falls into place, Dartmouth could even find themselves with a share of the Ivy League Championship. Yet the Big Green are not thinking that far ahead yet.

Big Green ranked second in press poll

In the Ivy League Preseason Media Poll, which was conducted among 16 members of the media, the Dartmouth men's and women's basketball were ranked second for the 1995-96 season. The picks came as little surprise for Dartmouth supporters since the men, third last year in the Ivy League, have a strong core of returning players, while the women, last year's Ivy Champions, are known for their annually strong teams. The poll was released in time for the Ivy League conference call yesterday afternoon in which Ivy League men's and women's basketball coaches shared their brief outlooks for the upcoming season.

Big Green overwhelm Lions

The Dartmouth football team made it five wins in a row this weekend with a wild 43-27 victory over the Columbia Lions in New York City. Dartmouth sandwiched two Columbia-owned second and third quarters between an overpowering first and fourth for the Big Green, with 17 and 20 unanswered points respectively in those two quarters. "It was an up and down game for both teams, and it just seemed like whoever made the most big plays was going to win," safety Lloyd Lee '98 said about the see-saw battle Saturday. Lee's big play in the fourth quarter, a crucial break-away touchdown punt return, ended up being the final blow that kept Columbia down for good. The win for Dartmouth lifted them into a three-way tie for third in the Ivy League, while Columbia, 3-2 in the Ivies and 3-4-1 overall, continued to slide from its former perch on top of the League earlier this season. The Big Green, now 3-2 in the Ivies and 6-2 overall, looked like they were going to run away with this one, jumping ahead 17-0 on their first three possessions in the game, but the Lions made things a bit more complicated, thanks to a three-touchdowns-in-four-minutes momentum stealing second quarter. But first things first.

Men's hockey opens season with tie and loss on the road

The men's hockey team opened its regular season this past weekend in disappointing fashion with a tie and a loss in two road games against the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames. The Big Green fought to a 3-3 tie at UIC Pavilion on Friday night, but came up on the short end of an 8-6 decision on Saturday night. None of the weekend results will affect the Big Green in the ECAC standings, since UIC plays in the CCHA, and is therefore a non-conference opponent. But the team had hoped to start the regular season on an up note, and Saturday night's 8-6 shootout is especially troubling, given the team's stated desire to play a more defensive brand of hockey. Dartmouth 3, UIC 3 Friday night's contest featured both strong special teams and strong goaltending from both squads. UIC jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Chuck Mindel beat goalie Scott Baker '97 with a powerplay tally 3:42 into the first period, but Brent Retter '97 pulled the Big Green even with a powerplay score of his own less than three minutes later. After the Big Green went on top 2-1, thanks to a goal from Bill Kelleher '96, it appeared Dartmouth would hold the lead until the end of the period. But the Flames caught the Big Green napping, and evened the game at 2-2 with just two seconds left in the first stanza. UIC scored the only goal of the second period, a powerplay goal by Al Dunbar about halfway through the period. The third period was also quiet, with only one goal scored, but fortunately for the Big Green, it was Kelleher's second tally of the game.

Football carries four game winning streak to Columbia

After a commanding 23-7 victory at Harvard last weekend, capping a flawless [4-0] month of October, the Big Green Machine rolls into the Big Apple to take on the upstart Lions of Columbia. Everything is riding on the clash between the Big Green and the Lions Saturday, as both teams are stuck in clear-cut, must-win situations. Dartmouth, 2-2 in the Ivies and 5-2 overall, brings a four game winning streak, second best in the League this year, to the Lion's den in New York City.

Men's hockey opens tonight; Big Green optimistic

With back-to-back non-conference games tonight and tomorrow night at the University of Illinois-Chicago, the men's ice hockey team officially opens its 1995-96 campaign. After a 6-3 exhibition victory last Friday over Dalhousie University, a Canadian squad, the Big Green are hoping to get off to a fast start, as they did last year when they opened with three wins in the first four games, including a 6-5 overtime thriller against nationally-ranked Vermont. But unlike what happened during the 1994-95 season, the squad is looking to carry the momentum of a quick start throughout the heart of the conference schedule. Last season the Big Green's quick start fizzled and by January the squad was mired in a 10 game winless streak.
