The men's and women's track teams competed separately last weekend, the men at an invitational hosted by Northeastern and the women at the University of Massachusetts. Men's team: UMass barely edged out the Big Green men at Northeastern for a first-place finish with 64 points.
The Dartmouth baseball team did not come home with what it was looking for in Providence this weekend, losing three of four games in two doubleheaders against Brown. The weekend dropped the Big Green to 5-7 in the Ivy League and into the Red Rolfe Division cellar, if you can call it that. At least the Big Green have a room of their own.
Team pulls out a win against Fairfield but drops three others
The first half of Saturday's lacrosse game between Brown and Dartmouth was as emotional as a Ricki Lake show about mother's who steal there satan-worshipping daughter's transvestite boyfriends, as Dartmouth tried to recover from its loss to Yale and Brown tried to seek a playoff tournament birth. Brown prevailed in the end, however, pulling ahead of the Big Green to take a 17-6 victory. Brown jumped out to an early lead, but Dartmouth was determined to keep pace with the Bears.
Every year, most college teams can look over their season schedule and pencil in their share of easy wins. Wednesday's game against St.
Coach Bill Johnson's prediction that his men's golf team would "surprise a lot of teams in the spring," came true this weekend with a second place finish at this year's Yale Invitational. Second only to Yale, who used its home course advantage to its fullest, Dartmouth beat out four other Ivies, golf powerhouses Central Connecticut and UConn, as well as 10 other fine squads. Due to extremely demanding and, at times, virtually illegal pin positions, none of the 95 players in the field managed to break par, and only 14 managed to break 80. With a great effort, Jay Lavender '97 posted a 78.
Team defeats Ivy League opponent Yale 8-7 in final three seconds
Have you ever seen a boat with wings? Have you ever seen a boat "fly" against heavy tailwinds? If you went to see the women's crew races down in Boston this weekend, this is precisely what you saw.
Yesterday, Yale's men's lacrosse team escaped the angst and urban decay of New Haven, Conn., enjoying a sweet 15-7 victory over old foe Dartmouth and avenging an embarrassing home loss a year ago. And emotions ran high. Not only were the two teams vying for the Ivy League championship, and a possible tournament berth, but the teams were tied for the 18th seed in the country. The two teams got into a dog fight in the first half as they scrapped for every ground ball, goal and possession.
The Big Green men's heavyweight crew team came away victorious in every race, as it swept the University of New Hampshire, in Durham, on Sunday. The freshmen boats were victorious in all three of their races, as was the junior varsity boat, which cruised to an easy win by more than 15 seconds. The varsity race proved to be the tightest for the Big Green rowers, as they managed to hold off UNH by a single boat length. The varsity race was neck and neck for most of the 1,750 meter course, but Dartmouth made a strong move with 100 meters remaining and pulled out the victory. One reason why the varsity boat may have struggled, while the junior varsity boat rowed strongly, was an unusual lineup change made for this race. Instead of anchoring the varsity boat as the members are accustomed, co-Captains Brian Palm '96 and Tom Gilmore '96 were switched into the junior varsity boat. "It was actually a lot of fun rowing with the junior varsity boat," said Palm.
Kim Mendelson '97 helped out the lacrosse team this past weekend, scoring six goals on the way to the team's 19-8 victory over Cornell. The Big Green tied a previous Dartmouth record for the most goals in a game with this win.
Big Green falls to 4-18 overall after four key Ivy League losses
Led by a fourth place finish by Sara Vogler '96, the women's golf team took fifth place at the University of Hartford's Invitational Tournament last weekend. Princeton took top team honors, shooting 658 (325-333). The Lady Tigers were followed by Yale and Rutgers.
Yesterday was one of those rare days when you just roll out of bed and get excited knowing that it's going to be a great day to play frisbee on the Green or take a nice run. Dean of the College Lee Pelton also decided to take a nice run in the Boston Marathon. Working together, Pelton and his wife, who also ran, managed to keep a steady, but comfortable pace from start to finish.

After a whirlwind weekend away, the Big Green men's tennis team returned to Hanover Saturday night with a 1-1 split.
A strong first quarter propelled the men's lacrosse team to an easy 15-6 win over Cornell Saturday at Ithaca. The win kept the Big Green, ranked 19th in the nation, perfect in the Ivy League, improving their record to 2-0, with an overall record of 4-2. Cornell started off the scoring just 1:16 into the first quarter, but it did not take the Big Green long to recover. Tom Scott '96 responded with an unassisted goal just 50 seconds later.
The weekend's competition proved tough for the men and women of the Dartmouth track team. The women's track team fell Saturday to the University of Vermont and the University of New Hampshire, while the men fell to UVM. Vermont won the women's meet with 74 points.
There was no joy in Mudville this weekend. The Dartmouth baseball team lost two ugly ones to the Quakers of Pennsylvania in New Hampshire's sloppy spring conditions at Red Rolfe Field. In their Ivy League home opener against last year's Ancient Eight Champion and sole representative to the NCAA College World Series tournament, the Big Green barely showed a heartbeat, compiling seven hits and one extra base hit -- a two-run dinger by rookie right fielder Nick Ratliff '99 -- in both games. "Penn's a good team and they can put alot of runs on the board and do it quickly," Head Coach Bob Whalen said. He also said his team's layoff due to poor weather hurt them against the Quakers.
