Cochrane Cup nabbed from heavyweights

After four years, the Cochrane Cup is out of Big Green hands.

The men's heavyweight crew team traveled to Boston this weekend with the hopes of sweeping both Wisconsin and MIT to keep control of the Cochrane Cup. Unfortunately, the team came up short as it easily defeated MIT, but was held off by Wisconsin.

Wisconsin came out strong and established a solid lead of three to four seats early on. This advantage proved to be too much for the Big Green to overcome despite several surges during the race.

"Every time we made a move they countered," Captain Tom Gilmore '96 said. "It was a disappointing race."

The race was originally scheduled to be hosted by Dartmouth, but the inconsistency of the current on the Connecticut made racing impossible. The race was moved to MIT.

Gilmore pointed out that this weekend's results indicate that there is incredible parity among the elite crews in country.

"Princeton beat Brown by two seconds and we only lost to Brown by .6 seconds. The top 10 boats are all within about four seconds of each other, so anything could happen at Sprints," he said.

Next up for Dartmouth are the Orangemen of Syracuse who will come to Hanover to take on the Big Green next Saturday.

"We're gonna train really hard this week and then probably take it a little easier next week before Sprints," Gilmore said.

Gilmore also said that the team will continue having seat races all this week during practice. He feels that even if seats do not change much it is always good to make sure you have the fastest boat possible for Eastern Sprints.

"Two years ago we lost to Brown by nine seconds, and two weeks later we lost to them by two seconds and took a silver medal at Sprints," Gilmore said. "So you can really make up a lot of time in the final two weeks of the season. We just gotta get our act together and take control the last two weeks."
