Dartmouth head coach John Lyons summed up his team's dismal situation with a simple simile. "It's like we have a black cloud hanging over us," Lyons said Thursday as he ate pistachios in his office. The Big Green football team might be the butt of jokes on campus and beyond, but no one can deny that it is a team plagued by bad breaks. The Big Green came into the season off a trio of disappointing 2-8 campaigns, built confidence, but then lost star QB Greg Smith '02 to a season-ending finger fracture. Dartmouth begrudgingly turned to Evan Love '05, who dislocated his finger before making a modest starting debut in a 27-20 loss to Columbia. Then on Wednesday, more bad news as--you guessed it--the Big Green was hit with another injury.
By far the biggest game in the Ivies this weekend is Brown against Penn. The 3-2 Bears, owners of the most potent scoring offense in the league, look to even up their Ivy record (2-1) with the 3-0 Quakers' who are 5-0 overall.
Well, the season has just passed its halfway point and already it has been quite a ride. After the sobering experience of the September 11 attacks, Dartmouth's first three weeks represented the headiest days the program has seen in years.

The Big Green finished the two-day, ten-team Lake Champlain regatta with 41 points, besting Tufts' 62, Rhode Island's 66 and Vermont's 81. The Lake Champlain Regatta, hosted by the University of Vermont, was marked by heavy winds and high seas. After the first day of sailing, the Big Green pairing of skipper John Diskant '04 and crew Clementine James '05 stood on top of the standings in Division A, although only three points clear of second-place Rhode Island.

The Dartmouth women's soccer team will step onto Chase Field Sunday at noon in an Ivy League match-up against Columbia, hoping to capitalize on the momentum gathered after Wednesday's rousing 2-0 win over Syracuse. A few key changes in lineup and pregame warmup seemed to make the difference in Wednesday's match, helping the Big Green avoid the disastrous string of early goals-against that had hampered earlier efforts.

Last Saturday, in the first quarter of a 49-17 loss at Holy Cross, Dartmouth's All-American candidate quarterback, Greg Smith '02, broke the middle finger of his throwing hand to all but certainly end his spectacular season. To that point, he was leading the Ivies in every major passing category and had rallied the Big Green to the point where it looked like it might have a shot to contend for a league title This week, Smith had surgery on his hand at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, officially ending his season and possibly his career. Here, Smith speaks about the season that was, the season that could have been and what he thinks the future holds for Dartmouth football and its new quarterback"freshman Evan Love. It was like a dream season.
