Fitness center obeys compliance in hiring athletes

|

College is expensive. From room and board and unbelievable textbook prices to an extensive wardrobe of Big Green gear and multiple late-night delivery charges from EBAs, the dollars can start adding up for any Dartmouth student. In order to help alleviate some of these financial woes, many students look for jobs during the summer months, with students on campus during sophomore summer often turning to the College itself as an employer. But for the student-athletes participating in Dartmouth's varsity sports teams, the road to summer employment is paved a little differently than it is for the non-student-athlete. The College itself does not have any special protocol for on-campus employers when it comes to hiring student-athletes.

'09 swimmers maintain momentum during summer term

|

While most Dartmouth sophomores are spending their summer alternating between classes, trips to the river and hanging out on the green, the members of the men's swim team are waking up early and training to improve upon last year's record (2-10, 0-8 EISL). They are readying themselves for a difficult and strenuous winter season where daily practices will be even more demanding and exhausting than they have been in the past.

Lovejoy explained how he ended up signing with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. "My agent talked to a lot of different teams and he gauged the level of interest around the league," Lovejoy said. He begins training immediately. "I fly to Pittsburgh tomorrow and attend a week-long conditioning camp, then I'm living in Boston for the summer," Lovejoy said on Sunday.

Three members of class of 2007 named academic All-Americans

|

Dartmouth student athletes are expected to excel both athletically and academically. In some cases their hard work on both fronts pays off, as shown by College Sports Information Directors of America's recent recognition of three Big Green athletes as Academic All-Americans. Nick Bonacci '07 of the men's lacrosse team was named to the first team, while Whitney Douthett '07 of the women's lacrosse team and Lindsay Mann '07 of the alpine ski team were both named to the second team. Bonacci was a three-year starter for the lacrosse team at attack and finished his senior season leading the team with 20 assists, and was third on the team in total scoring with 45 points.

Ski team the high note for athletics in 2006-2007

Kawakahi Amina / The Dartmouth Staff While Hanover may be well known for its snowy white winters, this year the Big Green was the dominant hue of the season when the Dartmouth ski team brought home the top national prize, a feat that headlined an impressive year for athletics at the College. Big Green skiers plowed through the regular season to win the NCAA team championship in Bartlett, N.H., marking the first time a Dartmouth varsity team has won a national title since 1976.

Spring teams earn mixed results

Jessica Griffen / The Dartmouth Staff The spring season produced mixed results for Dartmouth athletics, as Big Green teams earned finishes varying from winless Ivy League records to winning conference championships. Dartmouth baseball had high expectations to live up to going into the 2007 season, as the Big Green tried to replicate last year's near-miss of an Ivy League championship game berth.

Phil Bracikowski / The Dartmouth Staff On Tuesday May 15, the Dartmouth varsity eight women's boat was awarded an at-large bid to the 2007 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships. Dartmouth had not been invited to the NCAA's since 1999. "We were thrilled to death to see what they accomplished by the leadership of many of the seniors and the coaching of [Wendy] Levash," Athletic Director Josie Harper said.
