Charity sports tournaments dominate weekend athletic action

As varsity sports near the end of the spring seasons, Dartmouth students have begun to transfer their pent-up athletic energy into a variety of recreational sports charity tournaments. On Sunday, some students took part in the PanHellenic Council's annual flag football tournament at Hanover High School, while others stepped up to the plate in a charity whiffleball tournament hosted by Alpha Delta fraternity. For those who chose to test their skills with flag football, the ultimate prize was the Golden Football, which was presented to the winners of the men's and women's division finals. On the women's side, Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority claimed the Golden Football, while an at-large men's team registered as LAXXXXX won the men's tournament. This weekend's tournament marks the fourth time the event has been held, according to PanHell President Jessica Lane '09.

Men's rugby uses strong defense to claim Ivy League title

Dartmouth's men's rugby team dominated its competition in post-season play last weekend as Dartmouth routed Harvard, 41-0, to win the Ivy League championship tournament, hosted by Columbia University in New York City. The second-seeded Dartmouth team outscored its opponents a combined 163-0 over three games in the tournament. Dartmouth men's rugby has been a powerhouse program for over a decade.

Women defeat Cornell in home weekend crew races

For the first and only time this season, all three Dartmouth rowing programs raced in Hanover, on Saturday during first-year family weekend. While the women had success, both the men's heavyweight and lightweight crews struggled against highly-ranked opponents. Dartmouth women's crew took home the Parents' Cup in a victory against Cornell.

Men's lax finishes season with victory over Harvard

BEN GETTINGER / The Dartmouth After losing an early 3-0 lead, five Big Green players connected for six fourth-quarter goals as Dartmouth men's lacrosse defeated Harvard, 12-6, Saturday in Cambridge, Mass., in the Big Green's season finale. Despite losing the lead to Harvard (6-8, 1-5 Ivy) for a short span in the second and third periods, the Big Green (7-7, 3-3 Ivy) played a second straight week of impressive team lacrosse. "I think that throughout the game we played very well," captain Doug Rendall '09 said.

Dartmouth's pitching staff has a 5.74 earned run average, third best in the Ivy League, and a combined record of 24 victories, the highest in the league.

Lions come to Hanover for Ivy Championship games

It will be the second meeting of the two teams this season.

Three Big Green golfers compete in Northeast Invitational

Three members of the men's golf team traveled to Portsmouth, R.I. to compete in the University of Rhode Island Northeast Invitational Tournament at the Green Valley Country Club this past weekend. While other teams competed for the team title, the Big Green golfers competed individually.

Softball splits with Harvard in home-to-home season finale

In its final conference games of the season, Dartmouth softball split with first-place Harvard in a four-game home-and-home series this past weekend. Dartmouth (13-25, 9-11 Ivy) swept Harvard (24-20, 14-6 Ivy) on Saturday for the second time in Big Green history, winning the first game, 8-3, and the second, 4-3, in Cambridge, Mass. The return to Sachem Field for Sunday's games in Hanover did not give the Big Green any home field advantage, however, as Dartmouth dropped the first game, 4-2, and the second, 5-2, to close out its season. Dartmouth finishes in second place behind Harvard in the North Division of the Ivy League.

The first varsity boat rebounded from its loss to Yale, taking the Subin Cup from Columbia by .6 seconds Sunday.

Lightweights split weekend races with win over Columbia

Courtesy of Susanna Curry Dartmouth's men's lightweight rowing team has had a flair for the dramatic this season, and Sunday afternoon was no different. The Big Green had a close victory against Columbia in the Subin Cup at Orchard Beach Lagoon in Pelham, N.Y., on Sunday.

The Big Green will compete for the Ivy title in a home game that will gauge Dartmouth fan enthusiasm.
