Track and field dominates in first oudoor home meet

Jennifer Argote / The Dartmouth Senior Staff Dartmouth's men's and women's track teams won joint meets against Middlebury, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Vermont in Hanover on Saturday. Both Big Green squads stomped the competition across the board, seizing first place in 27 of 38 events. The men's team took the day with a score of 120 points, trailed by UNH with 61 points, UVM with 19 points and Middlebury with seven points.

Crew roundup: Photo finish gives lightweights Biglin Bowl

The Dartmouth men's lightweight crew team had a historic victory on Saturday, as the Big Green won the Biglin Bowl over Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the fourth time in the 59-year history of the event. The varsity eight boat made up a deficit of a boatlength in the final 500 meters of the race, defeating the Crimson in a photo finish. It was also the first time in Biglin Bowl history that both the varsity and the second varsity boats for Dartmouth were victorious. The varsity eight boat won in a time of five minutes and 51.8 seconds, just edging out the Crimson, which clocked in at 5:51.85. The second varsity eight bested its Harvard counterpart crew by two and a half seconds, with a time of 6:05.6. Commodore David Smith '08 was happy about the victory, but not fully satisfied with the team's performance. "It's hard to be satisfied if you have to come up on a crew from behind and bring it up to even," Smith said. For the first 500 meters of the race, both boats were even.

Men's lax falls to UVA on the road

Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team suffered a tough defeat on the road Saturday, losing to No. 4 University of Virginia 11-7. Co-captain Doug Rendall '09 said he was not satisfied with the team's performance, citing inconsistency as Dartmouth's primary problem.

Mike Novosel '10 saved 11 of 24 shots on goal, and men's lacrosse earned its first Ivy League win with a 17-14 victory over Yale Wednesday afternoon.

Freund leads equestrian at Zones

COURTESY OF THE DARTMOUTH AEGIS For the seven seniors on Dartmouth's equestrian team, the upcoming Ivy Championships will mark the last team competition in their collegiate careers. Co-captain Lily Macartney '08 summed up the attitude of the seniors. "People are pretty excited about this weekend, pumped to go out with a bang," Macartney said. For the whole team, the show will conclude a successful season. In regular season contests, the team never finished lower than fourth place, competing with eight to 10 other teams in each show. After the regular season, nine of the 15 riders qualified to participate in the Regional Championship, a competition for the best riders in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and parts of Massachusetts. Following the regional competition, four senior riders -- Macartney, co-captain Daisy Freund '08, Elizabeth Bissell '08 and Katherine Scovner '08 qualified to compete in the Zone Championship, a contest between the top finishers from several Regional competitions. The Zone competition is comprised of the best riders from all of New England, and winners continue to the national championship. At Zones, Freund finished in first place in the Open Flat competition and fourth in her Cacchione Challenge class.

Big Green softball closes in on .500 with victories over Bears

Dartmouth softball went three for four in back-to-back doubleheaders against the Brown Bears in Providence, R.I., this weekend. On Saturday, the Big Green won twice, 4-3 and 1-0, while on Sunday, Dartmouth took game one, 7-3, before losing the nightcap, 5-3. The Big Green (9-20, 5-7 Ivy) is currently in second place in the North Division of the Ivy League, behind only Harvard (16-15, 7-3 Ivy). Brown (4-19, 1-11 Ivy) currently stands at the bottom of the Ivy League.

Dartmouth leads the Ivy League with a .318 team batting average and has a conference-high 10.91 hits per game.

Baseball wins three at Brown to extend hot Ivy start

Maggie Goldstein / The Dartmouth Staff Dartmouth baseball took three of its four weekend games at Brown, splitting Saturday's doubleheader with an 8-2 win and 18-6 loss and taking both games Sunday against the Bears, 9-7 and 16-14. After this weekend's results, Dartmouth (17-10, 10-2 Ivy) is in first place in the Red Rolfe Division of the Ivy League, two and a half games ahead of Yale (15-18-1, 7-4 Ivy). Meanwhile, Brown (13-16, 5-7 Ivy), the defending Ivy League champion, dropped to five games behind the Big Green. The Big Green scored runs in five of the seven innings in game one Saturday, while co-captain Russell Young '08 earned his fourth win of the season, holding the Bears to just two runs on eight hits, striking out two. Dartmouth was not as effective in the second game of the afternoon, both offensively and defensively. Freshman pitchers Jake Pruner '11 and Dan Ternowchek '11 gave up 16 of Brown's 18 runs.

The Dartmouth varsity lightweight eight, the defending Eastern Sprints champion, dispatched Delaware by three seconds Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.

Crew roundup: Lightweights best Delaware in opening race

Kawakahi Amina / The Dartmouth Staff Over the weekend, Dartmouth's rowers were able to come away with victories in Massachusetts, but had a tougher time in the state of Connecticut. The Dartmouth lightweight rowing team beat the University of Delaware in three out of four races, winning the varsity eights, the second varsity eights and the varsity four in Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
