Advertising budget likely to face cuts, Hopkins says

As the College's endowment falters, any budget cuts to the advertising and marketing offices of the athletic department will depend on the amount of corporate sponsorships received this year, according to Sam Hopkins, associate athletic director for marketing and promotions. Hopkins said that there is a direct correlation between these sponsorship sales and how much money can be allotted to Big Green promotions. "It all depends on how well sponsorship sales go," he said.

Men's, women's basketball to take on Yale and Brown

|

Sophie Novack / The Dartmouth Staff The Dartmouth men's and women's basketball teams will square off against another pair of Ivy League rivals this weekend, hoping to cement their respective statuses as serious Ivy League championship contenders after impressive, morale-boosting victories last weekend. The men's team (4-14, 2-2 Ivy) heads into the weekend doubleheader coming off its first win over the University of the Pennsylvania in 12 years last Saturday in Leede Arena. A three-point play from Dan Biber '09 with eight seconds left in regulation capped off a last-minute Dartmouth rally that edged out a win over the Quakers 63-60 at Leede Arena. Climbing to the middle of the pack in the league standings, the men's squad will attempt to win consecutive games for the first time this season, as the Big Green faces Ivy rivals Brown and Yale for its last homestand before a two-week roadtrip. "I think in the last decade, we have not have been in the top of the league, and people overlooked us," Robby Pride '10 said. Though Brown and Yale come into Hanover carrying consecutive losses, both teams swept the season series against the Big Green last year. Against the Bulldogs, Dartmouth will try to take away offensive second chances by limiting Yale's offensive boards. Against the Bears, the Big Green men will look to stifle forward Matt Mullery.

Track teams find success at Classic

The Dartmouth track and field teams posted strong results over the weekend at the Dartmouth Indoor Classic. The athletes competed individually against contenders from an array of New England schools, including Sacred Heart University, Westfield State College, Keene State College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Middlebury College. The men's team notched a string of notable performances in the track and field events with six first place finishes. Attention fell upon Muhammed Abdul-Shakoor '10, as he delivered a first place finish in the 60-meter dash with a personal-best sprint of 6.95 and in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.75. "Running my personal best last weekend was great after a week of hard work and attention to details," Abdul-Shakoor said. Tim Edmonds '09 also captured the top spot in the 400-meter run, with a time of 49.71, and Julian Thomas '09 came in close behind him with a 50.87 second-place finish. Brendan Norris '12 made serious strides toward his personal record, finishing the 800-meter run in first place with a time of 1:56.49. In the men's shot put, David Irving launched a 17.26-meter throw that landed him in second place overall. The Big Green women's team also delivered a strong showing, earning seven first-place finishes in the meet. Dartmouth overwhelmed the competitors in the 400-meter run, sweeping the top-four spots.

Men's squash blows past Brown in 9-0 sweep, women fall 5-4

Zeke Turner / The Dartmouth Senior Staff The Dartmouth men's squash team shut out Brown with a resounding 9-0 victory, but the women suffered a hard-fought 5-4 loss on Saturday morning at the Berry Raquet Center. The Dartmouth men (11-5, 1-3 Ivy) picked up their second consecutive 9-0 victory following a dominating performance against Hamilton College last Sunday. This weekend's win was perhaps more significant, though, because it is the men's first victory in the Ivy League. "This win is crucial for our team's confidence, especially after a tough loss to Cornell last weekend," co-captain Andrew Boumford '09 said. Although Nick Sisodia '12, the men's team's number-two player, was sidelined with a minor injury, the Big Green men still dominated throughout the match. Boumford and fellow captains Ted Newhouse '09 and Tyler Young '09 each won easily in three games at the number one, two and six spots, respectively. Michael Lewis '11, Ted Schroeder '11 and Stephen Wetherill '12 all quickly disposed of their opponents as well. The only matches that went to five games ended with Luke Lee '12 pulling out a 9-4 victory in the fifth game of his match at the number eight spot, and Michael Shrubb '10 clinching a victory at the number five spot with a 9-0 victory in his final game. Boumford said the Big Green went into the match with confidence, and proved it could overcome some unexpected obstacles. "Without Nick we had eight players step up to play higher positions," Boumford said, "Everyone came through to secure an expected jack-hammering.

Athletes and Sororities: Who's where, and why?

Stephanie Han / The Dartmouth Editor's Note: This is the second in a two-part series examining the relationship between varsity sports teams and Greek organizations at Dartmouth. In this year's winter rush process, as in years past, a contingent of the potential new members were athletes that perhaps did not want to rush during their fall season or were off last term.

The No. 9 Dartmouth women's hockey team enjoyed two big wins this weekend, defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 8-4 on Friday night and then beating Union College 4-2 Saturday. The two ECAC hockey conference wins should ensure that the Big Green remains in good position for the postseason. Amanda Trunzo '11 scored a career-high four goals Friday night against RPI.

Men's hockey soundly defeated RPI Friday night in Hanover, but was unable to secure a victory over Union College Saturday.
