'Steady and crafty' fencer named to conference All-Star team

Dave Seliger '12 was en garde last week as he battled his competition to secure an impressive record at the Northeast Intercollegiate Fencing Conference, leading him to be named to the NIFC's All-Star team. Conference commissioner Dr. Elliot Lilien said that Seliger earned this award because he is a "steady and crafty" fencer with a strong record in league competition. The recognition is rarely granted to Dartmouth athletes.

Smith '11 continues to improve after record-breaking year

|

Every pitch counts for Big Green closer Ryan Smith '11, who enters games knowing that hanging even one curveball or walking one batter could mean the difference between a win and a loss for Dartmouth. Smith has resisted the pressure well, breaking the Dartmouth team record with seven saves last season, a mark he recenlty tied this year. With all seven of Dartmouth's saves this season, the right-hander has an overall ERA of 4.86 and an ERA of 2.16 against Ivy League teams, the lowest among the Dartmouth pitchers.

Knapp and I are going to shy away from an entire Toe To Toe on the Final Four, because in my mind, there is not much that either of us could write that hasn't been said before.

Toe to Toe: Knapp vs. Rose (Knapp)

Spring has sprung. As I write this column, which Jordan and I decided would serve to both to gain valuable facetime for our respective sports, as well as to preview the NCAA basketball championships, I am sitting on a bus driving back from our first race of the season.

Crew finishes weekend with near-perfect results

Maggie Goldstein / The Dartmouth Staff Both the Big Green men's heavyweight and women's crews swept their races this weekend during their first regattas of the year. The men's lightweight crew began the season by capturing victories in three out of their four races against the University of Delaware this weekend. The Big Green women's squad overcame difficult racing conditions during Saturday's regatta, topping Northeastern University, the University of Rhode Island and Boston College. The Dartmouth women's varsity eight clocked in at 7:38.7, just ahead of Northeastern, who finished in 7:43.7. Battling strong headwinds and plowing through white caps, the Big Green women established a half-length lead at the settle, and a full-length lead by the 500-meter mark. The morning's choppy waters and 20 miles per hour gusts made for a rough first 500 meters, according to captain Kate Harney '09, although the squads adapted to the conditions. "For rowing, wind is an important factor," she said.

Softball falls to UMass 5-0 after game is called due to rain

|

The Dartmouth softball team fell 5-0 to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst on Wednesday. The game lasted five and a half innings before heavy rain in Amherst, Mass., forced the umpires to end play. Dartmouth (10-12, 3-1 Ivy) struggled to get on base throughout the game, and co-captain Ashley Gleason '09 was responsible for the team's only hit. Dartmouth pitcher Hillary Barker '12 said that the Big Green was looking to build on the team's experience training and competing in California. "Over spring break, we played really tough teams, so we were expecting to keep up that intensity and compete," she said. The game started off slow before UMass (16-6) picked up momentum in the fourth inning.
