Big Green falls prey to Eagles in 31-point loss

The Dartmouth men's basketball team opened regular-season play on Friday, falling 89-58 to Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The game marked the first time since 2005 that the Big Green (0-1, 0-0 Ivy) suited up without 2009 Ivy League Player of the Year Alex Barnett '09, who graduated in the spring. Jabari Trotter '12 led all Dartmouth scorers in the game with 10 points.

This school's mascot situation is ridiculous. Honestly, what happened? During my first two years here, there was a whole mess of competition and controversy over what our mascot should be.

Aerial attack will be key for Big Green in battle with Brown

ZACH INGBRETSEN / The Dartmouth Staff Coming off a thrilling double-overtime victory against Cornell, the Dartmouth football team will travel to Providence, R.I., this weekend to take on Brown in another an Ivy League matchup. The Big Green (2-6, 2-3 Ivy) can move into third place in the Ivy League with a win on Saturday, but will have to play a complete football game in order to have a shot against the heavily favored Bears. Brown (5-3, 3-2 Ivy) was picked to finish third in the Ivy League preseason media poll, and is considered by many to be one of the strongest teams in the conference. Despite their seemingly average record, the Bears are an experienced team that is loaded with upperclassmen who have proven themselves in big games.

Soccer shuts out Cornell to maintain second place in Ivies

AKIKAZU ONDA / The Dartmouth Staff Two second-half goals pushed the Dartmouth men's soccer team past Cornell (5-6-5, 0-3-3 Ivy) on Saturday to secure a vital 2-0 win, keeping the team in contention for an Ivy League championship. The win keeps the Big Green (10-5-1, 4-2-0 Ivy) tied with Brown for second place in the Ancient Eight, while an overtime victory by Harvard over Columbia kept the Crimson on top of the league. Andrew Olsen '11 put the Big Green ahead in the 53rd minute, when Lucky Mkosana '12 sped up to collect a loose ball, carried it to the box and set up Olsen to net his third goal of the season. Mkosana doubled the lead in the 72nd minute, when he sprinted to a long ball from co-captain Dan Keat '10 and carried it up to fire a powerful shot past Big Red goalie Rick Pflasterer. "I think the most important thing was after the first half, we went out really hard and we all worked together," Mkosana said. Mkosana now leads Dartmouth with eight goals, while Keat still leads the team overall with 20 points. Although the Big Green forced Pflasterer to make four saves in the first half against multiple long balls and free kicks, the period remained scoreless. Keat nearly scored the Big Green's first goal in the 23rd minute, when he sent a ball down the left wing for Mkosana, who collected it and crossed back to Keat at the top of the box, but his shot missed high. Mkosana also came close to scoring in the dying minutes of the first half when he claimed a ball from a corner, but his shot hit the top of the post. Cornell took only three shots in the first half and created few chances, but an early attempt did force rookie goalkeeper Sean Donovan '13 to make his first save. Led by Olsen and Mkosana, the team took a little over eight minutes of play after halftime to score the game-winning goal. The Big Red's closest chance to counter came in the 63rd minute, when a breakaway left Dartmouth at a three-on-two disadvantage, but strong defense by Pumi Maqubela '10 and Teo Larsson-Sax '13 forced a high shot. The Big Green closed out the second half with nine shots, for a total of 16 on the game.

Volleyball has weekend sweep with wins over Brown, Yale

NICHOLAS ROOT / The Dartmouth Staff In its last homestand of the season, the Dartmouth women's volleyball team gave the home crowd a memorable performance, outlasting Brown in a tight five-set tiebreak on Friday night and rallying past Ivy powerhouse Yale on Saturday. Leede Arena has been good to the Big Green (11-11, 7-5 Ivy) this year, with seven of the team's 11 wins coming at home. After a five-game slide that spanned over two weeks in October, Dartmouth has now won its last four matchups, climbing to a fourth-place tie with Harvard in the Ivy League standings. On Saturday's Senior Day match against Yale (18-4, 8-3 Ivy), Dartmouth got even with a Bulldogs squad that had cruised past the Big Green in straight sets earlier in the season. For co-captains Megan MacGregor '10 and Morgan Covington '10, the victory over Yale was a fitting sendoff for two seniors who have become key players in Dartmouth's starting lineup. "Beating Yale at home on my Senior Night was definitely one of my favorite moments while playing at Dartmouth," MacGregor said.
