In Stanford's scandal's wake, athletes' academics questioned

|

While Stanford University's athletic department was recently implicated for encouraging athletes to take easy classes through a "Courses of Interest" list, Dartmouth's athletic department does not maintain a list of easy class offerings for in-season Big Green athletes, Athletic Director Harry Sheehy said in an interview with The Dartmouth. The athletic department will never compile such a list, Sheehy said, adding that it would be very unlikely for a list to be distributed from any athletic department in the Ivy League. An anonymous member of the football team confirmed that a physical list does not exist in an interview with The Dartmouth, but went on to say that the team works together to determine which courses to take during the season. "It's more of people talking to each other and telling each other what's easy," he said.

After a successful and entertaining abroad term in Spain, I have finally returned to Hanover (aka the frozen tundra) to resume my career as a dedicated student. Because my class work in Spain was best described as nonexistent, I received a few rude awakenings during my first week back.

Lacking a cute watch or any knowledge of how to actually use iCal, I'm telling time this year by the presence or absence of baseball on Red Rolfe Field.

Men's crew opens season with win

While the Big Green men's heavyweight crew team began its spring season with a bang at its regatta on Saturday earning first-place finishes in nearly every category the men's track and field and golf teams had a bit of a slower start, finishing in the middle of the pack in their respective matchups. MEN'S HEAVYWEIGHT CREW The first, second and third varsity boats all won in their matchups against Holy Cross University on Saturday.

Baseball splits weekend road series

|

Patton Lowenstein / The Dartmouth Staff The Dartmouth men's baseball team opened its Ivy League season with two wins in a double-header against Columbia University on Saturday, but saw an eight-game winning streak come to a close against the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday. The 6-4 and 8-1 victories over Columbia (11-11, 2-2 Ivy) represented a rematch of last year's Ivy League Championship, in which the Big Green (12-6, 2-2 Ivy) defeated the Lions in a three-game series.

When I first agreed to write a column, I thought, "It can't be too hard, and it has to be easier than writing a story every week." Yeah, not exactly. Countdowns and top 10 lists, while fun, are being done by other people on the staff.

Men's hockey players go pro

Doug Gonzalez / The Dartmouth Senior Staff The Dartmouth men's hockey team has hung up its skates until next fall, but several Big Green standouts Joe Stejskal '11, Adam Estoclet '11, Evan Stephens '11 and Rob Smith '11 have already transitioned to professional careers in the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League. Dartmouth captain Scott Fleming '11 is still waiting to hear about his future in professional hockey, Dartmouth head coach Bob Gaudet said, and "another guy or two" may also receive an offer. Stejskal was the first to cement a professional contract, signing up with the Montreal Canadiens just three days after the Big Green's ECAC consolation game victory.
