Softball heads west for NCAA tourney

Sunday evening while watching ESPNU, the Big Green softball team learned that it would head to Tempe, Arizona, to play No. 9 Arizona State University in its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance. The winner of the game will play the winner of San Diego State University versus the University of Michigan while the losers will meet in the double-elimination tournament.

Hanover is finally heating up as spring is winding down. The seniors are enjoying their last weeks on the Green, juniors are reminiscing about the glory days of 13X and freshmen are dreading leaving the place they’ve just learned to call home. There is one lucky class, however, that anticipates the arrival of one of Dartmouth’s best traditions: sophomore summer. From swimming and sunbathing to the occasional class (just kidding, go to class!) or road trip, it’s a different campus atmosphere than anything most of these sophomores have experienced thus far.

Women’s track and field second at outdoor Heps, men take fifth

Just 13 points separated the Dartmouth women’s track and field team from the Ivy League title at the outdoor Ivy League Heptagonal Championships at Yale University this weekend. The meet was not decided until the women’s 4x400-meter relay, the final track event of the day, finished. The men’s team improved on its sixth-place finish at the indoor championships, finishing in fifth place.

Baseball falls to Columbia in Ivy League Championship Series

New York -— Despite scoring first in both games, the baseball team ended its season in New York this weekend exactly as it did last year, falling to Columbia University in the best of three Ivy Championship Series. The Lions (27-17, 15-5 Ivy) took the Big Green (18-21, 11-9 Ivy) 6-2 in game one and 4-1 in game two of a Saturday doubleheader. The loss on enemy turf represents the fourth in a row for the team, leaving the four seniors — Louis Concato ’14, co-captain Jeff Keller ’14, co-captain Dustin Selzer ’14 and Ryan Toimil ’14 — without the gratification of a League title in their careers.

Hanover, it looks like you finally got it right. It’s spring outside after what feels like the longest tease since the Sox won a title and the Curse of the Bambino was finally lifted from Fenway (hey Freddie). Spring weather means one thing and one thing only: intramural softball. Though we obviously discussed squaring off against the softball team, we realized that they were probably up against other (obviously not more important) opponents after winning that whole Ivy League Championship thing for the first time in Dartmouth history. That, and we wanted nothing to do with Morgan McCalmon ’16 and her heater.

Baseball heads to Ivy Champ. Series

Dartmouth and Columbia University emerged from the carnage of an all-out battle for the Red Rolfe and Lou Gehrig Division titles last weekend, ending one of the most dramatic regular seasons Ivy League baseball has seen in years. Both teams rallied from second place deficits forged in early season play to come back and take their divisions in one-game playoffs against surprise Division competitors, Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania. This sets up a rematch of last year’s series, which the Lions won.

The D Sports Awards: Best Male Athlete

This year saw major achievements for the Big Green across the athletic spectrum: three Ivy League titles already — women’s cross country, equestrian and softball — and baseball is playing in the Ivy League Championship Series this weekend along with the track and field teams heading to outdoor Ivy League Heptagonal Championships. Here at The Dartmouth, we wanted to commemorate the achievements of Dartmouth athletes and teams this past year, which is why we’re introducing the first annual D Sports Awards.

Women’s rugby finishes fourth at ACRA sevens nationals

The women’s rugby team finished fourth at the American College Rugby Association sevens championship this past weekend. Hot off the heels of winning the Ivy League sevens championship the previous weekend, the team culminated its sevens-only spring season with the tournament.

Equestrian rides to 10th at Nationals

The equestrian team concluded its most successful season by taking 10th place out of 16 schools at the IHSA Nationals competition last week in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This season, the Big Green won both its regional and Zone competitions to qualify for the national horse show for the first time in program history.

Baseball team wins one-game playoff for Rolfe Division crown

In the rain and against the odds, the Dartmouth baseball team brought home its seventh straight Red Rolfe Division title by crushing the Yale University Bulldogs 11-4 in a one-game playoff Sunday afternoon at Biondi Park. The team, rising from the hole it dug itself by opening the season with a 5-9 Ivy League record, ended on an eight-game winning streak, which it will take to Columbia University (25-17, 15-5 Ivy) next weekend for the Ivy League Championship Series.
