Letter to the Editor: Split Decision

|

To the Editor: The contention that the current mode of nomination and election "splits" the vote in trustee races has never been proved ("Elections could seal fate of AoA suit," April 28). In an approval voting system, the voters can vote for as many candidates as they wish -- hence there is no "splitting." Mr. Smith was named on a majority of the ballots; no other candidate in his race was.

An Appropriate Anthem

|

The Hood's "Black Womanhood" exhibit is largely my fault. Well, not mine personally. More so than it does for black women, the exhibit tells the story of white men.

Short Answer

|

There is really very little that students should have to do in this election. The trend of collecting signatures from prominent students in support of the pro-board packing and the anti-board packing schemes, which was started rather ignobly by agents in Dartmouth Undying, is frankly silly.

Vox Clamantis: An Apology

|

To the Editor: I would like to express my concern for Dartmouth students who were pained by the recent student party "Hip Hop in the Hood" on April 11 held in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition, "Black Womanhood: Images, Icons, and Ideologies of the African Body." Please accept our apologies for the distress and misunderstandings this event has caused.

Vox Clamantis: The Dartmouth Worth Saving?

|

To Alex Felix '08 and James Bleuer '08 and other members of the Phrygian Society who share their views, I would ask a simple question: Does this comic represent the "way of life" that you are fighting so actively to preserve from the "heavy hand of the administration"? From The Dartmouth article describing the Phrygian Society ("Secret society pushes anti-administration agenda," Mar.

Keeping Perspective

Recently, Melissa Fan '08 e-mailed out to campus, apologizing for her role in approving the now infamous "Hip Hop in the Hood" dance party-exhibit ("Students oppose hip hop party," Apr.

Verbum Ultimum: The Real Stakes

|

If it hasn't become painfully clear already, the upcoming Association of Alumni executive committee election has devolved into a bitter us-versus-them strife between the petitioners and the administration-backed slate over who actually loves Dartmouth. Admittedly, obnoxious tactics are part and parcel of every political campaign, but this AoA election is shrouded in more than its fair share of polarizing and alarmist rhetoric.

Editor's Note

|

In Thursday's edition of The Dartmouth, an editorial cartoon was published on page six that failed to meet the newspaper's standards for respectful expression, offending many of our readers and indeed those of us who serve on the newspaper's Editorial Board. The cartoon, BlarFlex, which has appeared regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays this term, has been discontinued.

A Corrupting Legacy

|

While the Dartmouth Class of 2012 admissions statistics -- including records of 16,536 applicants and just a 13.2 percent acceptance rate -- portend a bright future for the College, they disguise a problem that subverts the very purpose of this esteemed institution and has become far too widely tolerated: high acceptance rate of legacy students. The College acknowledged that the acceptance rate for legacy applicants (29.7 percent) ran over twice as high as that for everyone else (12.7 percent) and that the total number of legacies admitted was the highest in five years.

The End of The Liberal Student

The term "liberal" has certain connotations. These connotations become even stronger when coupled with the word "student." The Liberal Student is one of the distinguishing marks of recent generations.

Earth Week To-Do List

|

I'm about to go against everything I usually preach, but that's okay. It's time for action. Carrying around my ECO mug for late-night chai, making sure I recycle that Sunja's Sushi container and air-drying my hands after reading the latest edition of LavNotes is very self-satisfying in the name of environmentalism, but it's not enough.

For Art's Sake

|

On his blog, Perez Hilton recently said that "sometimes people use the excuse of 'art' in order to get away with craziness!" A fan of 'art' myself, I'm a little hesitant to trust the so-called "Queen of All Media." However, if you witnessed the atrocity of Wenda Gu's hair curtains this past summer, or were a student at Yale this past week, you might feel like slapping your knee with an "Amen, Perez!

Not All Good In The Hood

|

After many discussions on the topic, I am moved to respond to the Hood Museum's recent event, "Hip-Hop in the Hood." The party was meant to celebrate the opening of its new exhibit, "Black Womanhood: Images, Icons, and Ideologies of the African Body." Instead, it served to commodify and objectify the very group of women it claimed to represent. First, I should say that I love the artwork in the "Black Womanhood" exhibit.
