Two freshmen, one junior compete for VP spot

Following the withdrawal of two candidates, the race for Student Body Vice-President has intensified with only three remaining candidates, Chris Galiardo '06, Travis Green '08 and Jeffrey Coleman '08, vying for the position. The two freshmen candidates are current members of the Student Assembly, but Galiardo has no Assembly experience. Galiardo, a self-described "outsider," spent three years in Germany working for several magazines and serving as editor-in-chief of one before attending Dartmouth. Despite his lack of Assembly experience, Galiardo is confident in his ability to succeed as VP.

Students petition after Tassel resigns

In the wake of Abby Tassel's resignation on April 4, many Sexual Abuse Peer Advisors are pressuring the administration to take the process of finding a new Sexual Abuse Awareness Program director seriously by compiling statements from students she helped. Aya Caldwell '06 and Christine Kim '05 are gathering testimonials from everyone who has worked with Tassel or has been affected positively by her in any way.

RIAA sues undergrads using i2hub

The Recording Industry Association of America brought 405 copyright infringement lawsuits against the students of 18 colleges and universities yesterday in a strike aimed at users of the popular file-sharing program i2hub, which runs on the university computer network known as Internet2.

SA recognizes Lagomarsino for teaching excellence

Student Assembly presented history professor David Lagomarsino the Profiles in Excellence teaching award at a gathering of about 20 students Tuesday evening in recognition of the professor's commitment to undergraduate teaching. Before choosing Lagomarsino, the Assembly's Academic Affairs Committee weighed nominations from the student body via BlitzMail messages, in which students described how their chosen professors exemplified excellence in teaching. Academic Affairs Committee Chairman Russell Lane '06 said that the committee selected the history department vice chair because of his extraordinary nominations. "His nominations really stood out from the rest of the pool," Lane said.

Senior administrators blast Bush cuts

Dartmouth administrators sharply criticized a decision by the Bush administration's Office of Management and Budget to eliminate the Upward Bound and Talent Search education programs from its 2006 spending plan. The OMB, the President's office in charge of overseeing the federal budget, decided to halt funding for the two programs in favor of funneling the money to other educational programs. "The proposed cuts in these programs seem to be a really bad idea to us," Dean of Admissions Karl Furstenberg said.

Frisbee players plan veggie-powered summer road trip

Fourteen Dartmouth seniors and one junior will embark on a cross-country road trip this summer without ever paying the skyrocketing cost of gassing up their bus' fuel tank. As part of the Big Green Bus Club's grassroots campaign to promote alternative fuels, the group of ultimate frisbee players will travel to over 40 cities on a converted school bus powered by vegetable oil.

Greeks garner over $10,000 in awards

The College awarded over $10,000 in prize money to Greek organizations and individuals Monday night at the annual Coed, Fraternity and Sorority Achievement Awards, hosted by the Order of Omega Greek honor society and the Office of Residential Life. The awards fell into six categories representing the Greek communities guiding principles: accountability, service, inclusivity, brotherhood/sisterhood, scholarship and leadership. Collis Commonground was filled for the event as the leaders of Dartmouth's CFS community showed their support. "Greek organizations play an integral role in many aspects of the Dartmouth community and have a profound impact upon campus life" said Order of Omega awards committee co-chair Mary Reynolds '05.
