At the first-ever People of Dartmouth panel on Thursday, four panelists spoke about finding community at the College. Their stories varied from adapting to a community with a mixed socioeconomic profile to finding support on campus despite having parents who refused to pay tuition.

On Thursday evening, six panelists shared personal stories about coming to Dartmouth from low-income backgrounds, describing the difficulties and surprises that they have experienced. The panel, called “The Taboo Identity,” and small-group discussions that followed fostered dialogue about socioeconomic identity on campus.

DHMC partners with local hospitals

|

Compelled by fiscal challenges in today’s health care system, some hospitals choose to partner with each other to share medical responsibilities and financial strategies, with the goal of improving the overall value of the services they provide. On Feb. 10, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Cheshire Medical Center announced that they would pursue a partnership, DHMC’s latest in a series of regional affiliations that aim to reduce costs and improve quality of care.

President emeritus highlights veteran experience

At 74 years old, Wright still teaches in the College’s history department, as he did when he first came to Dartmouth in 1969. Professors say he developed some of the most significant American political history courses at the College, including one on U.S. political history in the 20th century, which is still offered today.

International student applications drop 20 percent

This year, the College experienced a 20 percent decline in the number of international applicants, part of an overall 14 percent decline in applicants to the Class of 2018. International students at the College attributed the decline to recent media coverage, the College’s focus on liberal arts and its rural location.

Lisa Hogarty, a former vice president of campus services at Harvard University, will join the College next month as vice president for campus planning and facilities. At Dartmouth, Hogarty will oversee the College capital program, facilities planning, labor relations, operations and management of the Hanover Inn, according to a College press release.

New housing options will begin next fall

Director of residential education Mike Wooten facilitated a lively discussion, collecting feedback on three new housing initiatives: a global village community, an arts and innovation community and a design-your-own housing community program. These residential options, which offer students with common interests opportunities to learn together outside the classroom, will be instituted by the office of residential life in the fall.

Replacing Dartmouth’s current sexual misconduct policy with a zero-tolerance policy for students found responsible for sexual assault has recently gathered momentum on the Improve Dartmouth online forum. Since a Feb. 10 gathering on the Green, when students met in support after a male student threatened a female member of the Class of 2017 on Bored at Baker, discussion surrounding the policy has grown.

Human resources senior recruiter Beau Benson independently runs the Dual Career Network, which works with partners and spouses of the College’s new hires to find staff positions at Dartmouth or elsewhere in the region.

Geisel applications rise

|

The Geisel School of Medicine saw a 27 percent increase in applications for the fall’s entering class than for the entering class of 2013. Candidates sent in 5,241 completed applications to compete for fewer than 90 available spots, which will result in a acceptance rate of about 1.7 percent, according to a recent Geisel press release.
