Hearing scheduled for alleged attackers

A July 14 probable cause hearing is the next step for the two Upper Valley men arrested and charged with robbing and assaulting a Dartmouth student early Wednesday morning. If probable cause is found, the case will proceed to trial at the Grafton Superior Court.

The alleged attackers, Mark Ruppel, 26, of Canaan and Troy Schwarz, 20, of Lebanon, are still in custody at the Grafton County Jail, held on $20,000 and $10,000 cash bail, respectively. The pair, formally charged with robbery, second-degree assault and falsifying physical evidence, appeared in the Lebanon Circuit Court for an arraignment Wednesday.

Just after midnight on Wednesday, the Hanover Police were notified of an ongoing attack on the Green. According to a press release, Hubert Clark '13 was walking across the Green when he was attacked. His assailants continued to kick and strike Clark after he was on the ground. Clark was later taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Hanover Police Chief Charlie Dennis said a police investigation is in motion, though he would not specify a timeline for the investigation.

Dennis said that Hanover Police do not plan to amp up security around campus.

"There is nothing that would indicate this is a pattern," he said.

Clark declined comment to The Dartmouth onWednesday. Ruppel did not respond torequestfor comment. The Dartmouth made a call to a number listed for Schwarz, but received no reply.
