Axis of Evil Announces First Summit in Pyongyang

|

Axis of Evil leaders seem closer to achieving unity because of their common desire to support worldwide terror than at any time since their covert organization was exposed by President Bush in early 2002. In a joint statement released yesterday, the foreign ministers of Iran and North Korea announced the First Axis of Evil Cooperation Summit to be held in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, early next year.

Controversy erupts over Al-Nur website

|

A series of recent editorials and letters to the editor concerning controversial statements on the Al-Nur Dartmouth Muslim Student Association website have sparked a controversy over whether the student group should be subject to sanctions for placing offensive material on its website. The strife began after a piece entitled "Preaching Hatred at Dartmouth" ran in the June 29 issue of The Dartmouth.

The Student Assembly plans to take business to a higher level of professionalism this summer. Led by summer president Todd Rabkin Golden '06, the Assembly's goals include improving communication with students and changing its image. In an effort to improve communication with students on campus, Assembly leaders will update their previously unused BlitzMail bulletin on a weekly basis while maintaining their website and Hopkins Center bulletin board with current information. As part of its image change, the Assembly also plans to redesign its logo.

Faith under Fire

To the Editor: Some recent articles about material on the Al-Nur website have called into question the role of religious opinions in creating and sustaining a compassionate, pluralistic educational community. Religious organizations at Dartmouth are free to express the tenets of their faith on their websites and in other ways, despite the fact that some of those tenets, especially taken out of historical context, may cause offense to others.

Ferrell keeps his boat afloat with 'Anchorman'

|

Of all the "Saturday Night Live" alums to make the inevitable jump to the big screen, only a few -- such as Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers -- have been able to amass a body of work that has achieved box-office success and also garnered at least some degree of critical acclaim.

Guides lead rash of would-be '09s

Sophomores are not the only ones to discover the magic of Hanover during the summer. Many prospective students join in the fun as well. As most sophomores don their bathing suits and enjoy "Camp Dartmouth," sophomore tour guides at the Admissions Office work overtime.

Kresge prepares for fitness makeover

|

After years of student lobbying to expand the Kresge Fitness Center, the Board of Trustees earmarked funds for the project at its last meeting and the Athletics Department has begun planning for the renovation of the second floor of Alumni Gymnasium to accommodate the new fitness center. The current center will move upstairs to a space at least double its size, while the intramural, club and physical education activities that currently use the space will be relocated downstairs and to other locations, Associate Director of Athletics Roger Demment said. "Obviously one of the major objectives here is to provide a new and improved fitness center that is much larger than the one we have and contains much more equipment than the current one, and at the same time, be able to provide for all the programs we currently offer," Demment said. The project is still in its early stages, however, as athletics officials continue to work with architects to develop plans for renovation. "We've been in talks with the architects.

SEAD graduates 16 high schoolers

|

After three summers of guidance, 16 rising high school seniors graduated from the Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth program Monday night at a ceremony held in Dartmouth Hall. This year's graduates were the second class to complete the SEAD program since its inception in 2001 after area resident Carol Fuchs approached Tucker Foundation Dean Stuart Lord with the idea of creating a summer program for high school students. According to Jay Davis '90, SEAD's director, the program's mission is to help disadvantaged youth by developing their personal strengths and promoting growth and learning in many areas. "We want to expand their conceptions of what's possible in their lives," Davis said. Those who graduated from SEAD's third year last night said they felt this goal had been accomplished.
