The vandalism of the Chabad menorah in early December was a reminder that the “Dartmouth bubble” has not always included Jewish students, harkening back to the days when the admissions office maintained quotas for the number of Jews in each class, academic departments sought to hire mainly Protestants and most fraternities barred Jewish students from membership.

Senior societies navigate challenges as winter tapping proceeds virtually

Dartmouth’s 14 recognized senior societies and various unrecognized ones are gearing up to pass the torches on to the next senior class in a process known as “tapping.” This winter’s fully remote tapping process, which will embrace text messages, emails and Zoom calls, comes nearly a year after many current members of senior societies themselves underwent tapping virtually.

Delayed move-in raises last-minute travel concerns for students

‘Ghost town’ living: Students face isolation and dining concerns in interim housing

College faces projected $91 million loss in fiscal 2021

Despite the partial return of students to campus, the recovery of the financial markets and the prospect of widespread vaccinations, the College is, financially speaking, not out of the snowy New Hampshire woods. Dartmouth will face an estimated $91 million operating loss for fiscal year 2021 as it works to return to normal operations and begins planning for the long-term budgetary impacts of COVID-19.

Fall COVID-19 regulations keep campus case count low, but raise mental health concerns

Dartmouth’s mask requirements, weekly testing and restricted gatherings seem to have successfully staved off the virus this fall. Even as students returned to campus for the College’s first term of on-campus operations amid the pandemic, COVID-19 positivity rates remained below a tenth of a percent. However, some students and parents raised concerns that the regulations came at a cost to mental health, as gathering rules meant many students weathered the pandemic largely alone.

ED applicants reflect on virtual admissions process

Newly admitted members of Dartmouth’s Class of 2025, who had to get to know, apply to and interview with the College entirely remotely, faced unique challenges in what proved to be an especially competitive early decision admissions cycle. Out of a record-breaking 2,664 applicants, the College admitted 566 students on Thursday.

Q&A: Fed Challenge winners discuss historic win and COVID-19 economy

On Nov. 20, a team of Dartmouth students won the 17th annual national College Fed Challenge for the first time in the College’s 10 years of participation in the competition. The competition, which is organized by the Federal Reserve, takes place in two parts: a 15-minute scripted presentation in which students role-play as members of the Fed’s Federal Open Market Committee and provide a monetary policy recommendation, and a question and answer session about their recommendation in front of a panel of judges, who are members of the Fed.

A prolific researcher and dedicated father and husband, Alan Ivan Green was known for his endless enthusiasm, innate curiosity, steady nature and kindness. “He was a wonderful, warm, intense man who was one of the most curious people that I've known — a real scholar and someone who just was ready to make the most of every opportunity that came his way,” said Kathryn Kirkland, a fellow professor at the Geisel School of Medicine and Green’s friend and neighbor.

Eighty-six students removed from campus fall term

The College revoked the on-campus privileges of 86 students who violated COVID-19 policies during fall term, Provost Joseph Helble announced in a livestream on Wednesday afternoon. In a change from the policies announced at the start of fall term, all students asked to leave campus for violating COVID-19 rules can now return after two terms, rather than the original four terms.
