Masters of Engineering Management student Ifeoluwa Adeleye died on March 1 from an unexpected subarachnoid hemorrhage on Feb. 19, according to a March 2 email to engineering students from Thayer School dean Alexis Abramson. According to Abramson, Adeleye came to Dartmouth from Lagos, Nigeria with a background in chemical engineering and previous experience as a project engineer and manager.

On Feb. 13, tragedy struck Michigan State University when a gunman killed three students and injured five others. This shooting, just like dozens of others in schools across America, highlighted the shortcomings of MSU’s emergency response plan — including that students were not notified of the threat for nearly 15 minutes, leading to rampant spreading of misinformation about the threat.

A fire broke out in an unoccupied lab in Remsen Building, a building in the Geisel School of Medicine, early on Sunday morning. The building is temporarily closed for repair from smoke and water damage, according to a College press release.

Within 24 hours of the vote to strike by the Student Worker Collective at Dartmouth, news broke that the College had suddenly changed its mind on the union’s package proposal and verbally accepted it. Let that sink in. After all the time and lawyers’ fees wasted on stalled negotiations, which began all the way back in May 2022, all it took was one email threatening a strike for the house of cards to tumble down. The outcome sure seems inevitable, at least in retrospect.

In a Feb. 21 message posted on the College’s website, Provost David Kotz wrote that the College had decided not to voluntarily recognize a graduate student union organized by Graduate Organized Laborers at Dartmouth that would be associated with the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE). Kotz wrote that unionization would slow down an already “efficient” system of communication between the College and graduate students, currently mediated by collaboration with the Graduate Student Council.

On Feb. 17, the Hanover Police department issued an arrest warrant for the suspected perpetrator of several cases of unwanted sexual touching reported by female students in January, according to a press release from Hanover Police. The suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Piermont, New Hampshire resident William Menard.

The College verbally accepted an agreement to Student Worker Collective at Dartmouth’s $21 base pay proposal for student dining workers at a meeting Saturday evening, according to a statement posted on the SWCD website. The meeting was called by the College on Saturday after SWCD threatened to strike via email.

Last month, The Dartmouth reported some of the challenges students face when trying to do laundry in their dorms. From dryers that require several cycles to dry, to washers that leak or don’t adequately wring out clothes, to machines that don’t work at all, the current laundry system sets students up to fail. When adding in the exorbitant cost that students incur when these machines don’t work properly — it is clear that the current laundry service provider, CSC ServiceWorks, is not able to keep up with student needs, at least in its current state.

Retired Safety and Security officer Teddy Willey died from health complications at his mother’s home in West Virginia at the age of 63 on Feb. 9, according to his long-time best friend and former partner Lesia Vorachak.

This weekend, temperatures in the Upper Valley are predicted to drop to treacherously low levels, with some news outlets predicting wind chills between -20 and -30 degrees Fahrenheit. The College has taken many precautions to warn students about the risks of such low temperatures. Residential Operations sent an email explaining ways for students to keep their rooms warmer and Student Government emailed to inform students about a bus system that will pick them up and drop them off at their dorm clusters. And with a campus-wide email warning about the health risks of such cold temperatures — particularly when drinking —the College has taken important steps to ensure students are aware of the risks this weekend.

Mental health and wellness is always on the minds of Dartmouth students. Since it convened last March, this Editorial Board has published no less than four articles on various mental health topics, from the JED Foundation to the collective trauma of losing five of our classmates in less than three years. Similarly, David Millman ’23 and Jessica Chiriboga ’24, president and vice president of Dartmouth Student Government, ran on a platform of expanding and improving the mental healthcare options available to students.

Nothing gets college students angry like messing with their food. Aside from being essential, meals are a cherished moment to relax and socialize. Infringe on that, and there will be problems. Yet, that is exactly what Dartmouth Dining has done lately by increasing food prices and pushing students to purchase meal plans that give them less and less bang for their buck.

Dax Tejera ’07, a member of The Dartmouth’s Board of Proprietors and former Publisher of The Dartmouth, died of a heart attack on Dec. 23, according to Adweek. He was 37 years old.

This afternoon, Dartmouth accepted 578 members to the Class of 2027, drawing from a record-breaking pool of 3,009 early decision applicants, the College announced in a Dartmouth News article. The acceptance rate of 19% is an all-time low for the College’s early decision cohort. Additionally, 47 students were matched with Dartmouth through the QuestBridge program earlier this month, bringing the total number of soon-to-be students to 625.

College President Phil Hanlon announced on Dec. 6 that the College has created a new $100 million program called Dartmouth STEM-X to support historically underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The program is partially being funded by a $25 million gift from Penny Coulter and James Coulter ’82, the co-founder of global alternative asset management firm TPG.

Former College trustee Leon Black ’73 has been sued by a woman alleging that Black raped her at the home of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2002. Black is the namesake of the Black Family Visual Arts Center, and College spokesperson Diana Lawrence confirmed today that there are no plans to rename the arts center.
