Brown, frustrated and facing a 4-2 deficit at the beginning of the third period, played with a desperate physicality. Eighteen of the game's 25 penalties were handed out in the third period, including 11 after a major scuffle at the end of the stanza that left Big Green captain Mike Keenan '13 fighting to protect himself without a helmet.

Currently ranked third in the ECAC standings, the Union Dutchmen (10-5-6, 4-2-3 ECAC) consistently dominated Dartmouth (7-6-2, 4-4-1 ECAC) in all three periods. Union gradually established a 3-0 lead in the first period, before tallying two goals in the first two minutes of the second period and adding another two in the first half of the third stanza.

The Dartmouth men's hockey team led 3-2 early in the third period of its game against the University of Vermont on Sunday afternoon, but UVM (3-8-1, 1-6-1 Hockey East) notched three late goals to eliminate the advantage and earn a 5-3 non-conference win over the Big Green. The Big Green (4-5-1, 3-3-1 ECAC) suffered the loss in Burlington, Vt., after a 3-3 overtime stalemate in Hanover against Harvard University on Friday.

Although it was charged with three delay-of-game penalties due to a continuous flood of tennis balls from Big Green fans, the Dartmouth men's hockey team handily defeated Princeton University, 5-3, in front of almost 4,000 spectators on Saturday. The win capped a weekend sweep for the Big Green (3-2, 2-0 ECAC), which defeated Quinnipiac University, 5-4, with a late comeback effort on Friday.

Forward and assistant captain Doug Jones '12 was named one of the 20 men's hockey candidates for the 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, according to a Thursday announcement on SeniorCLASSAward.com. The CLASS award, which stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, recognizes excellence in academics and athletics, as well as commitment to the community. Jones was the Big Green's second highest scorer last season, registering 29 points. As an economics major, Jones has maintained a 3.5 GPA and earned Eastern College Athletic Conference All-Academic honors during each of the past three seasons. The field of 20 candidates will be cut to 10 finalists midway through the season before fans, media and Division I coaches select the CLASS award's final winner.

Dartmouth linebacker Luke Hussey '11 Th'12 was named a semifinalist for the 2011 National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Award, IvyLeagueSports.com reported. Brown University senior quarterback Kyle Newhall-Caballero, Yale University senior quarterback Patrick Witt and Columbia University senior offensive lineman Bob Hauschildt were also named semifinalists. The award honors senior student-athletes who excel academically and on the field, maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.2, NFF Chairman Archie Manning said in an interview with the website. Manning's sons, Peyton and Eli, both received the accolade before advancing to careers in the NFL. Of the 127 semifinalists chosen, 16 will be named finalists and will each receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. One student-athlete will then receive the 2011 William V. Campbell Trophy. Hussey, who is a fifth-year player for the Big Green, graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude from the College with a degree in engineering sciences.

Former Big Green football captain and baseball star Scott Creelman '64 died on Wednesday after a five-year struggle with cancer, according to Masslive.com. Creelman, who was 68, spent 35 years employed at Spalding Sports Worldwide, earning the positions of executive vice president, president and chief executive officer. While majoring in sociology at Dartmouth, Creelman earned All-Ivy honors and the football team's Bob Blackman Trophy. He led the 1963 football squad to a tie with Princeton University for the Ivy League Championship title. On the pitching mound, Creelman threw 89 strikeouts in the 1963 season, setting what was a single-season record at the time. Creelman attended Melrose High School in Melrose, Mass., where he lettered in three sports and was inducted into the Melrose High School Hall of Fame.

The Zimmerman Fitness Center is especially packed with students at the beginning of each term, according to Hugh Mellert, the center's longtime director. If Mellert had his way, every Dartmouth student would take advantage of the center's offerings year-round.

Princeton University's women's lacrosse team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship on Saturday. The Tigers held on for an 11-10 victory against James Madison University, with Princeton senior goalie Erin Tochihara stopping a last-second shot attempt by the Dukes. Tigers sophomore Charlotte Davis and JMU junior Ariel Lane both registered hat tricks, while senior Lizzy Drumm scored the game-deciding goal for Princeton with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Tigers will meet the top-seeded University of Maryland next Saturday to fight for a spot in the semifinals. The Terps, whose only loss of the season was to the Big Green in double overtime, are the defending national champions.

Wide receiver Tanner Scott '11, kicker Donald Kephart '11 and offensive lineman William Montgomery '11 were named to the 2011 National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Hampshire Honor Society last Wednesday. Membership is awarded to starting or significant substitute college football players from any division who maintain a grade point average of 3.2 or higher. Forty-one other Ivy League football players received the recognition. Brown University was the most represented among League schools in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, with eight football players recognized, while Dartmouth had the lowest number of representatives out of the Ancient Eight.

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Yale University fullback Shane Bannon in the seventh round of the NFL Draft on Saturday, the New Haven Register reported. Bannon, who worked out with the Chiefs in April, was the 223rd overall selection of the 254 players that were drafted and was the Chief's ninth pick. He is the first Yale football player to be drafted since 2004. Last season, Bannon posted a career-best 13 catches for the Bulldogs. Two of Bannon's former teammates, Chris Blohm and Tom McCarthy, did not get drafted but hope to be signed as free agents if the NFL lockout is resolved. Dartmouth longsnapper Shane Peterlin '11 and defensive end Charles Bay '11 were not drafted and must also wait for the end of the labor dispute before signing with a team.

Laurel Richie '81 was appointed president of the Women's National Basketball Association on April 21 by National Basketball Association Commissioner David Stern, according to a WNBA press release. Richie will assume her new position on May 16 as the WNBA heads into its 15th season this summer. She will oversee the day-to-day operations of the league under NBA Chief Operating Officer Adam Silver. Before her appointment, Richie who majored in policy studies while at Dartmouth served as senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Girl Scouts of America, where she managed branding, communication and publishing for the national organization. Richie's former work experience also includes time at advertising companies Leo Burnett Worldwide and Ogilvy and Mather, where she worked with brands like American Express, Pepperidge Farm and Huggies. Richie recently received the YMCA Black Achiever's Award and was named one of the 25 Influential Black Women in Business by The Network Journal. Richie's experience in marketing and advertising will serve her well as she tries to continue the development of the WNBA brand on the national stage, according to the press release.

The Dartmouth men's track and field team dominated the University of Vermont and Middlebury College at home on Sunday. Finishing in first with 105 points, the Big Green men were victorious in 14 of the 19 events. The Catamounts trailed in second with 46 points, while the Panthers finished in third place with only 40 points. Connor Reilly '13 won both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, earning a personal best in the 200-meter. David Irving '11 topped his opponents in the weight throw, discus and shot put. On the women's side, Dartmouth led the field, also beating Vermont and Middlebury. Alexi Pappas '12 set a school record in the 3000-meter steeplechase while Christina Alexander '11 dominated the throwing events, winning the shot put, hammer throw and discus.

Big Green starting quarterback Connor Kempe '12 was arrested for marijuana possession on April 4, according to the Hanover Police Department. Kempe will be charged with a violation on the civil level instead of the criminal level, according to Kempe's attorney George Ostler '77. "They chose to proceed on a civil level, which is not unusual for how the police proceed against young people who have never been involved in the system before," Ostler said in an interview with The Dartmouth. Kempe will appear before the Lebanon District Court in May and will likely be penalized with a $500 fine, according to Ostler. After playing in all 10 games and throwing eight of the team's 10 touchdown passes this fall, Kempe posted a 54.2 completion percentage, throwing for an average 165 yards per game. In the 2009 season, Kempe saw an increase in playing time, starting five consecutive games after quarterback Alex Jenny '10 was injured. Kempe, Athletic Director Harry Sheehy and head football coach Buddy Teevens declined to comment.

After falling to Cornell University in the semifinals of the ECAC Tournament last month, the Dartmouth men's hockey team has announced its new captains for the 2011-2012 season as well as its end-of-the-season awards. Blueliner Mike Keenan '13 will lead the Big Green as team captain, with the help of assistant captains Doug Jones '12, Connor Goggin '12 and Jim Gaudet '12. Keenan played in all 34 games this season and tallied 11 points, including three goals. Scott Fleming '11 received the Friends of Men's Hockey Leading Scorer Award for the second year in a row after notching 31 points. Rob Smith '11 was honored with the Smoyer Award for being the team's "unsung hero," Joe Stejskal '11 earned the McInnis Award for camaraderie and spirit and Nick Walsh '12 and Gaudet were named Most Improved.
