I briefly attended the talk that Senator Wellstone gave in Silsby last week. While I was there he was speaking about the problems that many Americans face today. What topped the list? Health care, child care -- for the most part, he was talking about how a family with a combined income of about $30,000 would afford vital services such as these in the face of ballooning costs.

What a strange break this was for me. It began with jury duty, which served as quite a reminder of what goes on outside of Hanover. We were hearing a case of assault and battery. Apparently one woman thought another was sleeping with her husband, and so they had a bit of a scuffle over this. I honestly don't think that it was worth my time to settle this disagreement between Ms. Greene and her neighbor, but as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts repeatedly pointed out to me, it is my Civic Obligation.

All right, so maybe I did write a column in the fall saying that TV in the dorms might not be the best idea in the world. Well, I changed my mind.

My parents went on a golfing vacation to Ireland two years ago, and while there they intended to try to find some relatives and look into our family history a little bit. Unfortunately, they neglected to do any investigation prior to their trip. Much to their surprise, they found that there was not one McDonald in all of Ireland.

Choose and perish. I never thought that any weekend could top the craziness of last Green Key. It was the party equivalent of a culminating experience. From Beerios to golf at two in the morning, that weekend truly had it all. We put more effort into our spring celebration than many classes. However, looking ahead to this Homecoming weekend, I think that we may have a new challenger for the title of caziest weekend. This weekend has the potential to be one of the most memorable of the year. It is a simple result of the convergence of three very important dates. Halloween, Harvard weekend, and Homecoming.

One of the nicest things about Dartmouth is being able to get away from it for a bit. Last weekend I went home briefly, and this weekend I'm going down to Boston to see the Head of the Charles Regatta. Short trips, just two hours each, and really not that big a deal, but it is a nice change from campus scenery.

I have to admit, my first reaction to the 'cable memo' that we all found upon moving in was one of excitement. Visions of Sportscenter danced through my head as I read the news. And why not? This school has a wide array of information that as students we all have ready access to. We have the internet at the touch of a finger, and we can get "All the news that's fit to print" delivered right to our doorstep. Amazingly all these resources are available to us here in the wilds of New Hampshire. Despite this, our access to television, probably the most widespread and powerful medium of our day, is limited at best. This is somewhat ironic for one of the top colleges in the country.

This crowd has gone deadly silent. Cinderella story out of nowhere, a former greenskeeper now about to become ... picked up by the Hanover police. I'm sure anyone out there who's familiar with the movie Caddyshack will understand the reference. Well, as my friend Errik was reenacting this scene on a few flowers in downtown Hanover, a patrol officer was observing his swing from across the street. Since we still had our enviromugs from the afternoon, I was given the pleasure of joining Errik in the back of the squad car.

They started arriving a week or two weeks back. I'm sure you're all familiar with how they read: "Hi everybody! I just finished finals and am heading home for the summer. See you soon." Of course they won't be seeing me for a while, since we aren't out of school for another three weeks.

The other day in my eleven o'clock class we were discussing how we know what the weather will be like. My method generally is to look out the window and this bit of wisdom was shared by a number of others in the class. While that is my system here at Dartmouth, it is not generally what I do at home. There I catch the news in the morning by radio or TV. I also watch the news in the evening, and will usually look over a paper. Some things may escape me, but I normally have a very good conception about what is going on in the world.

Upon reading the options offered to students under the referendum, I must say that I am a little confused. Rumors about Dartmouth Dining Services have abounded. By far the best one I have heard (and I wouldn't be surprised if DDS actually claimed this) is that the stealing of soda refills is at the root of DDS's financial worries. Considering a soda costs about four cents, this seems a little absurd. People would have to drink around twenty refills before DDS would lose money on this. I haven't noticed anyone camping out at the soda fountains recently, so I think this is not the cause of their worries.

I have had numerous signs and slogans lecture me on voting. I need to make my voice heard, make a difference, blah, blah, blah. Some have implored me that I am needed. Even my beloved "D" told me that I should vote in support of the Student Assembly. It is my responsibility to vote, or at least that's what I am told. Many of the candidates for Assembly and other offices seem to have latched onto this theme. I see variations of it plastered all over bulletin boards around campus.

How I miss it. All right, that isn't really true. My television viewing, even when I'm home is limited to about two shows, but I do miss some of the fine programming that you come across while channel surfing the upper reaches of the dial. I was reminded of this fact last Thursday while with a cable-endowed friend.

Most of you probably saw the Arizona Kentucky game this past Monday. It was one of the best finals the NCAA has seen in many years. It was the first time a four seed has won. That four seed beat three number one seeds to win. Those three number one seeds (Kansas, UNC and Kentucky) are also the top three programs in the country. The game was sent into overtime after a last minute three-pointer-to-tie by Kentucky.

Wouldn't you like to know, ladies? There are certain secrets that all men share with one another. The amazing thing is that all men worldwide seem to keep these secrets quite well. No one outside this exclusive circle seems to discover these secrets or, if they do, the powerful stereotypes that exist make them ignore the evidence before them. Witness my co-columnist.

As I turn 19 today, I pause to consider the changing meaning of my birthday. Birthdays were nearly as exciting as Christmas when I was a child. Not only were there many gifts that would be forthcoming, but I was the focus of all attention, something that never bothers a kid still in the single-digit ages. My mom made cupcakes for me to bring into school, about half of which survived the bus ride, as my greedy accomplices and I devoured them in the back. There was also a girl who had my same birthday in our class, so February fourth always meant double cupcakes.

There are certain social conventions that we all understand and respect. The one I am addressing today is bathroom etiquette. This topic includes those manners which make life a little nicer for everyone. Let me preface this column by saying that these comments are more relevant to men's bathrooms than women's. The reason for this is my own personal experience, which is lacking in the latter category for obvious reasons.

Many relationships develop in college, and many of them are platonic. Of these, still more are destined to turn from being platonic to a more serious and intimate relationship. Something my UGA Erica refers to as a "very special friend." Well, whatever you might call that state, making the transition to it can be difficult.

As we have reached yet another Friday, I find myself reexamining the merits of the weekend. Don't get me wrong, I look forward to a couple days off as much as anyone else, but it just seems that the weekend isn't all that it is made up to be. On the surface, it seems like a time of fantastic productivity, great fun, and lots of sleep. Unfortunately this perception is from a distance (Wednesday). The closer the weekend gets, the more it seems too short to really accomplish anything.

After reading Abiola Lapite '98's column, "Ecce Homo," I had to take another look around the campus to make sure that I was attending the same school as its author, Abiola Lapite. No one has approached me about joining a cult, nor have I received any harassment on my way to the library. I actually think that the studious habits of the men and women at this college have had a very positive impact on my own.
