The fraternity was suspended in July 2024 in connection with the death of Won Jang ’26.

Beta Alpha Omega fraternity will participate in Interfraternity Council recruitment this fall for the first time since 2024, Greek Life and Student Societies director Hunter Carlheim wrote in an email statement to The Dartmouth.

Beta and Alpha Phi sorority were suspended in summer 2024 after the death of Won Jang ’26, who was a member of Beta. On the evening of July 6, Jang attended a social event at the Connecticut River co-hosted by the two Greek organizations and then went swimming in the river with several of the event attendees. Jang’s body was recovered from the river on July 7.

Beta’s suspension will end following summer 2026, after which they will serve two terms of alcohol probation, in fall 2026 and winter 2027, according to College spokesperson Jana Barnello. They will also be on probation for spring 2027 before returning to full active status in summer 2027.

Carlheim wrote that GLASS “has been working proactively with Beta’s alumni board to establish what a return to active status will look like.”

“As with all new and returning organizations, Beta will work through a structured onboarding process that includes a written agreement covering recruitment, new member education, risk management and more,” Carlheim wrote. “All chapters are held to the same standards of accountability within the GLASS community.”

Representatives from Beta and the Beta alumni board did not respond to requests for comment.
