Delta Delta Delta sorority President Anne Jones received the Ranny B. Cardozo, Jr. '78 Award as "the outstanding member of the junior class" at a ceremony in Blunt Alumni Center yesterday afternoon.
"This is excellent," Jones said when presented with the award. "I don't know. I'm just this kid from Nebraska who stumbled into Dartmouth."
The committee selected Jones because of her work in the education and psychology departments, her volunteer work and her leadership in the Coed Fraternity Sorority system, 1997 Class Dean Teoby Gomez said.
Jones was not told she was going to receive the award until her name was announced at the ceremony.
She was lured to the ceremony by former Panhellenic Council president Dani Brune '96, who told Jones they were to attend a meeting to discuss sorority rush procedures.
Jones's name will be added to a plaque that hangs in Dean of the College Lee Pelton's office.
Gomez gave Jones a letter from Pelton, an embossed tray and two mint julep cups.
The award is special because students choose the winner, Gomez said.
A committee of seniors, led by the previous year's winner, chooses the award's recipient. Tom Caputo '96 received the award last year.
The award's selection committee is instructed to select "the outstanding member of the Junior Class who most exemplifies Ranny B. Cardozo's academic enthusiasm, genuine concern for his fellow classmates and energetic participation in campus and community activities."
