Newly announced off-campus programs in Ghana and Sante Fe, New Mexico, mark exciting additions to Dartmouth’s study abroad opportunities. With historical student participation rates of over 50 percent, studying abroad is as part of Dartmouth as the Homecoming bonfire, Dartmouth Outing Club first-year trips and mozzarella sticks at Late Night Collis. Yet the practice faces an uncertain future — enrollment dipped significantly with the Class of 2013. To reverse this trend, the College must reassess its approach to study abroad programs.

Softball head coach Rachel Hanson will not return for the 2014-2015 season after four seasons with the Big Green, athletics director Harry Sheehy said Thursday. Hanson led the team to its first-ever Ivy League Championship title this past season, and the team played in the NCAA Tournament for the first time.

Conversations about the Greek system are ubiquitous on this campus, as well as in the pages of this publication. Despite its relentless presence, however, campus discourse consistently overlooks a significant portion of students who belong to the Greek community. Coed houses and undergraduate societies — both of which are listed in the GLOS handbook — experience significantly lower visibility on campus than those houses awarded “mainstream status” — those that are single-sex. Although 96 percent of affiliated students join single-sex houses, the remaining 4 percent cannot be ignored. Excluding coed organizations from both campus consciousness and tangible privileges is harmful to both coed members and the greater Greek system.

A July 14 probable cause hearing is the next step for the two Upper Valley men arrested and charged with robbing and assaulting a Dartmouth student early Wednesday morning.If probable cause is found, the case will proceed to trial at the Grafton Superior Court.

A male student was assaulted and robbed on the Green just after midnight on Wednesday. The suspected assailants — Mark Ruppel, 26, of Canaan and Troy Schwarz, 20, of Lebanon — are charged with felony counts of second-degree assault, unarmed robbery and falsifying physical evidence. A third person was with the two suspects at the time of the attack, but he was not charged.

Men’s lacrosse coach Andy Towers will not lead the team next season, Dartmouth Athletics announced Wednesday. Towers, who has been with the Big Green program since 2005 and has served as head coach for the last five years, had a year remaining on his contract, the Valley News reported. The Valley News reported that Towers was fired.

Senior associate Dean of the College Inge-Lise Ameer will assume the role of interim Dean of the College on Aug. 1, the College announced Wednesday morning. Dean of the College Charlotte Johnson officially begins as vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Scripps College, located in Claremont, California, that day.

Geisel School of Medicine dean Wiley “Chip” Souba will not seek reappointment to a second four-year term, College President Phil Hanlon announced this morning. Souba plans to continue to work in medical education at Geisel.

A $10 million anonymous donation will support a new learning center at the Hood Museum of Art, the College announced Thursday. The center is part of the Hood’s major construction project that will begin in spring 2016. The Hood began planning its expansion in 2010 and chose New York architecture firm Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects to lead the project in 2012.
