Towers will not return to Big Green lacrosse

Men’s lacrosse coach Andy Towers will not lead the team next season, Dartmouth Athletics announced Wednesday. Towers, who has been with the Big Green program since 2005 and has served as head coach for the last five years, had a year remaining on his contract, the Valley News reported. The Valley News reported that Towers was fired.

Towers declined to be interviewed outside of business hours.Athletic Director Harry Sheehy could not be reached for comment, and varsity athletic communications director Rick Bender deferred all inquiries to Sheehy.

Named head coach in 2009, Towers had a 20-47 overall record as head coach, never finishing better than fifth in the Ivy League. This season, the Big Green finished without an in-conference win.

At the time of his appointment, players interviewed were optimistic that Towers would re-orient a program that had won four games the preceding season, only one of those games in the Ivy League. Then, Towers stressed a desire to make lacrosse a “lifestyle” for his players.

Towers had worked as the University of Hartford’s head coach and as an assistant coach at Fairfield University, Yale University and Brown University, his alma mater, before coming to Hanover. Twice named an All-American first-teamer, Towers helped Brown to an Ivy League Championship during his first year on its coaching staff. In a 2012 interview with Inside Lacrosse, Towers said that he became a coach aiming to lead an Ivy League squad.
