New system improves cell service

In an effort to increase cell phone signal strength on campus, Agito Networks will implement a new system at Dartmouth that will allow cell phones to use both cellular and wireless signals, according to David Bucciero, director of Technical Services at the College.

BlitzMail updates planned for 2009

After 20 years with only minor changes, BlitzMail will receive a complete facelift. The upgrade, expected to be completed by fall 2009, could include a built-in calendar, threading capabilities, increased search options and a new design for the interface. "[BlitzMail now] is like keeping a black and white TV in your house," Susan Warner, director of communications for Computing Services, said.

Library creates endowments

A contribution from the Manton Foundation will lead to the formation of a $3 million endowment for Dartmouth's Digital Library program and a $1 million endowment for maintenance of the Orozco murals in Baker-Berry Library.

Erickson '09 establishes First Voices newspaper

Feeling marginalized after last fall's debates surrounding the College's use of a Native American mascot, Agatha Erickson '09 created First Voices, a publication for members of Dartmouth's indigenous communities to express themselves and educate others. "Our voice tends to go unheard," Erickson, a Koyukon Athabascan Indian, said. After almost two years of work, First Voices is scheduled to be released this term during Pow Wow Weekend, which will take place on May 9-11.

Speaker separates science, religion

Science cannot be used to disprove the supernatural, Massimo Pigliucci, a professor at Stony Brook University, said in a lecture on scientists "misspeaking" about religion given in Filene Auditorium on Thursday evening. Pigliucci, a professor of ecology, evolution and philosophy, said that the conflict between science and religion is controversial because it deals with differing definitions of life.

Hanover native leads ski, sailing schools

Editor's note: This is the third installment in a 10-part series profiling various members of the Upper Valley Community. After managing night clubs, guiding fly-fishing trips, instructing skiing and working in restaurants, Kenneth McClintock, an Upper Valley native and one of Dartmouth's outdoor activities icons, returned to Hanover 19 years ago to work in the College's physical education program. McClintock, Dartmouth's assistant director of alpine skiing and sailing, rotates from job to job as the seasons change -- he spends one term teaching emergency rescue classes and devotes other terms to training students to be skiing and sailing instructors.

Order of Omega announces awards

ADRIAN MUNTEANU / The Dartmouth Staff Dartmouth's chapter of the Order of Omega, a national Greek leadership honor society, recognized the achievements of Dartmouth's Greek organizations and their members at its annual awards ceremony, held Tuesday in Collis Common Ground. Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority and Alpha Theta coed fraternity walked away from the ceremony tied in first place for the prestigious O'Connor Award, granted to the organization that exemplifies the most outstanding scholarship, leadership and service, inclusivity, brotherhood-sisterhood and accountability, according to an Office of Residential Life brochure.
