Nordic team races well

Because of the unseasonable weather in New England, the Johnson State College Carnival did not take place in Sugarbush, Vermont last weekend as scheduled. The alpine races were canceled, but the cross-country races were held a few hours north of Hanover, in Mont St.

New Hampshire overpowers Big Green

Enthusiasm flagged at Leede Arena last night as Scott Drapeau scored 25 points, leading the New Hampshire Wildcats to an 87-60 shellacking of the Big Green. With Dartmouth center Brian Gilpin '97 out with an ankle injury, suffered 11 minutes into the game, the Wildcats had their way inside. A rotating triumvirate of Dartmouth centers could do little against the 1993-94 North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year. With Gilpin out, the team was ineffective on the boards, getting out-rebounded 52-32.

The men's swimming team went into action last Saturday hoping to rebound from a close loss to the University of Massachusetts and snap its losing streak. Vermont trims Big Green in nail-biter

Catamount means mountain lion, and is short for cat of the mountain. The Big Green discovered this yesterday when the Vermont Catamounts strutted into Leede Arena and walked out with a 64-61 victory. As Vermont Coach Tom Brennan said after the game, Dartmouth "could have just as easily won it." Perhaps, but the realization does little to alleviate the sting inherent in such a loss. After playing superbly for much of the second half, the Big Green still found themselves down four, 62-58, with 2:42 remaining, after Vermont star Eddie Benton swished two foul shots. After several unproductive trips down the floor for both teams, Kenny Mitchell '97 was fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound in traffic. Mitchell hit the front end of his one-and-one, but missed the second.

Skiers win at international event

While most people in the north were outdoors enjoying the uncommonly warm weather or indoors watching the Chargers upset the Steelers on Sunday afternoon, the Dartmouth ski team hit the slopes. Although the warm temperatures and lack of natural snow made the Dartmouth Skiway slushy, the team persevered on the salted artificial snow and came out on top in the international FIS/UNI race. With 110 competitors, the race was an important one, both for the skiers and for the coaches who organized the event.

Track and field wins big

The Dartmouth men's and women's track and field teams both performed well this weekend, advancing to the finals of the third annual New England Challenge Cup next weekend. Running at the University of Maine Friday night, the women placed second in their qualifying meet behind the University of Massachusetts, qualifying them for the women's finals this Saturday at 3 p.m.

Women gain share of first place

To say it was a nailbiter would be an understatement. The fans were on the edge of their seats, coach Chris Wielgus and her assistants could not sit down. And the five Dartmouth players on the court kept running, rebounding and scoring until the bitter end. After watching the men's basketball team crush the Crimson, 73-65, the Dartmouth women's team did the same, defeating Harvard with a score of 81-77. The win lifts the Big Green's record to 5-7 overall, 2-1 in the Ivy League, after falling to Princeton and defeating the University of Pennsylvania last weekend. About five minutes into the second half, co-Captain Betsy Gilmore '94 sunk a shot from the right wing, edging Dartmouth ahead, 40-39.

Men's hockey loses to Brown, Harvard

The men's hockey team had another frustrating weekend, losing to Brown on Friday night and Harvard on Saturday night. The Big Green put forth good efforts both nights, but found themselves on the short end of both decisions, losing 6-3 to Brown and 5-3 to Harvard. Harvard 5 Dartmouth 3 Saturday night the Big Green, bolstered by a lineup shakeup by Coach Roger Demment, skated well but were stymied by Crimson goalie Tripp Tracy. Tracy was on fire for Harvard, making a career high 37 saves.
