Skiers victorious at Middlebury

Last week's Carnival at Dartmouth was a tremendous success, but there were, of course, a few things the Dartmouth ski team would rather not remember. It was heartbreaking for the men's Alpine team to lose to the University of Vermont in the Slalom race after beating the rivals the day before in the Giant Slalom. It was doubly painful when the Nordic men's team lost its Freestyle relay race for the first time this season.

But the team did not dwell on the past this weekend at the Williams College Carnival where the men forged ahead and won convincingly.

The Nordic men, avenging last Saturday's loss, took the win in both the 10K Freestyle and 10K Classical races. Captain Cory Smith '96 won the Freestyle race on Saturday and took second behind Aki Partenen of UVM in Friday's Classical.

His teammates also placed well, giving Dartmouth the lead. On Friday, Colter Leys '96 placed fourth, Brant Stead '96 seventh and Paul Stone '98 ninth. Saturday's race found Leys in third, Stone in eighth and Stead in tenth.

The Nordic women did not do as well on the trails as they did last week at Oak Hill when they placed second in the Classical race and third in the Freestyle. This weekend they placed fourth in both events; UVM, Middlebury and Williams took the top three spots both days.

Siri Halle of UVM won both races, but Captain Heather Eliassen '95 placed sixth on Friday and fifth on Saturday, giving the Big Green a modest finish. Unfortunately, some of the women were ill this weekend. Lara Burgel '96, who placed tenth in the Classic, was slowed by the flu, and Valerie Wrenholt '97 was too ill to race in Saturday's Freestyle.

"Hopefully we can all get healthy and ski well at Middlebury this coming weekend," Eliassen said.

On the slopes this weekend, the Dartmouth men took the lead in both Friday's Giant Slalom and Saturday's Slalom events. Jeremiah Thompson '96 had his first win of the season on Friday. Behind him were Captain Andy Martin '96 in second and J.P. Daigneault '97 in eighth.

Saturday was not as exhilarating for Thompson, but it was an overall success for the Big Green as Ben Robinson '97 placed first, Thompson fourth and Martin fifth. UVM had to settle for second overall this weekend in the men's Alpine events.

The Alpine women, not competing as well as they had hoped for this season, finished sixth place both days. UVM placed first in the Giant Slalom, led by a first place finish from Megan Brown, followed by teammate Gibson Lafountaine in second.

Middlebury won Saturday's Slalom race, although Lafountaine placed won the event. Both races were a letdown for the Big Green, as none of the Dartmouth women -- due to a number of falls -- finished in the top 10.

Sunday was also a day of Slalom racing for college Alpine teams, as the skiers made up the events from the Johnson State Carnival. (The Alpine events were canceled at the Jan. 20 and 21 Carnival due to the warm weather.)

The Dartmouth men, unable to match the previous days' success, finished second in Sunday's Slalom race, behind UVM. Thompson placed second behind Derek McClellan of UVM and Martin placed third. Daigneault finished 10th.

"I haven't been skiing as well as I can for the past couple of weeks, but next week, I know I'll be faster," Daigneault said. "At least I hope so."The women finished in third place on Sunday. Middlebury won the event and UVM placed second. Captain Jesse James '95 placed fourth, Kate Buhrmaster '97 13th, Rebecca Davenport '98 15th and Pam Finnerty '97 16th.

Next week, the Big Green travel to Middlebury, Vt. to compete in the E.I.S.A. Championship at the Middlebury Carnival, their last races before the NCAA National Championships, March 8-13.
