Ski team places first in carnival

|

The Big Green ski team finally broke through last weekend and captured their first overall victory of the season at the Williams Winter Carnival. In the process Dartmouth also thwarted the University of Vermont's bid to go through the carnival season undefeated. Dartmouth's victory was keyed by several tremendous performances on the nordic team. On the men's side, Cory Smith '96 and Colter Leys '96 finished second and third respectively, in both the 11 kilometer freestyle and the nine kilometer classic pursuit. In both races the only competitor that managed to best Smith and Leys was the dominant Thorodd Bakken of UVM. The women were lead by Denali Kemppel, who skied to a fourth place finish in both women's nordic races. Due to a faulty timer, the giant slalom races were cancelled, but that didn't slow down the men's and women's alpine teams.

Volleyball improves to 15-1

|

Following last week's huge victory against Harvard and follow-up 3-1 dismantling of Boston College, the men's volleyball team did not let up going into weekend competition, as the Big Green captured two more wins to improve their record to 15-1. On Saturday the Big Green played two matches against the University of Maine and the University of Vermont easily winning both 3-0. "Neither match was very intense," co-Captain Jeremy Longinotti '96 said.

Big Green split weekend games

|

The Dartmouth men's hockey team came tantalizingly close to a two-game sweep this past weekend, which would have put the squad in prime playoff position -- but instead the Big Green had to settle for a split, which in the end left them no better off than they were before the games were played. On Friday night at Thompson Arena, Dartmouth notched a convincing 3-1 victory over the RPI Engineers, and on Saturday night it looked as if the Big Green were well on their way to at least a tie with the Union Skating Dutchmen, before a late goal propelled Union to a 3-2 victory. A win for the Big Green on Saturday night would have given them 11 points and left the squad all alone in ninth place, just one point behind RPI for eighth in the ECAC -- with the chance for a home game in the opening round of the playoffs. But instead, the split leaves the Big Green (4-13-1 ECAC, 5-18-2 overall) in a three-way tie with Union and Princeton for ninth place in the ECAC, all three teams with nine points. Yale sits in the ECAC cellar, though the Bulldogs are just one point behind the pack, with eight points.

Men's basketball misses opportunity

|

There is little doubt that without help from either Brown or Yale, a 1-1 split on the weekend's New York road trip to Cornell and Columbia would have all but eliminated the Big Green's hopes for an Ivy League title and their first trip to the NCAA tournament since 1959. So, after losing a 61-57 overtime battle at Cornell on Friday night, the only thing Dartmouth could do was turn to the scoreboard and hope for an unlikely victory.

Women's basketball wins two

|

With less than three weeks left in regular season play, the women's basketball team successfully proved that the Big Green women are ready to take the Ivy League Championship as they dominated League opponents Cornell and Columbia this past weekend at home in Leede Arena. Friday night Dartmouth, ranked two in the League, battled number three Cornell which on paper was to be a tough game.

Big Green beat Harvard

Last night against Harvard, the men's volleyball team sprang back after losing the first game, winning three straight games and completing a season sweep of the rival Crimson. At first, the Big Green looked as if they were unready to play, just as they were Saturday against Plymouth State.

Men's volleyball to play Harvard

|

Tonight at 7:00 p.m. in Leede Arena the Dartmouth's Men's Volleyball team will face Harvard in what looks to be a grueling rematch of these two Ivy League powers. When they first met this season in Cambridge, Dartmouth was able to come out quickly and surprise the Crimson with consistent passing and evenly spread attacks.

With 17 points against Penn and 16 against Princeton, Tortolani, primarily a forward, also racked in a total of 11 rebounds and nine assists. "She came off the bench and did great for us," teammate Sally Annis '97 said.

Big Green split over weekend

|

The men's squash team beat Hobart 7-2 and lost to Franklin and Marshall College 4-5 this past weekend at F&M in Pennsylvania. Coach Chris Brownell said that the match against F&M "went a little better than expected." The team was missing Jon Gabel '98 but still managed to pick up four wins from co-Captain John-Keith Wasson '96, Zach Segal '98, Bill Tarr '98 and Ross Hallock '97.
