Men's volleyball gets 3rd at Ivies

After struggling through the first match of the Ivy League tournament last weekend, the men's volleyball club team recovered to take third place overall behind Princeton and Penn.

"It was definitely a good finish for us," Captain Jeremy Longinotti '96 said. "It was the best we've done at the Ivies in the four years I have been here."

For the first round, Dartmouth was placed in a pool with Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell.

The good news was that it avoided a pool with Princeton, ranked 16th nationally.

The bad news was that Harvard and Penn looked to be stiff competitors the Big Green would need to defeat to make the semifinal round.

And with starting outside hitter Matt Streng '98 off this term, Dartmouth had to cope with a change in its lineup.

The team started out slow with a match against Penn. The team faltered in its first match since Winter term, falling 12-15, 10-15 to Penn.

"We started a little sluggish in the morning," Longinotti said.

The loss put Dartmouth in serious jeopardy of not making the semifinal round.

Dartmouth managed to get back on track in its second match, however, putting away Cornell in three games, 15-11, 12-15, 15-8.

The match against Harvard, a varsity team, was deja vu from earlier in the season.

For the third time this year the Big Green left Harvard gasping. The convincing 2-0 victory (15-12, 15-10) was the second shutout of the season.

"We beat Harvard pretty convincingly," Longinotti said.

"Beating them three times in a row was definitely a milestone for us," he said. "It says a lot about the level of our team."

Its day's play pushed Dartmouth into the semifinal round, where Dartmouth was matched against Princeton, and Penn faced Columbia.

Princeton was a largely unseen commodity for the Big Green. The two teams do not meet in the regular season, and this weekend was the first time the two saw each other.

Longinotti described Princeton succinctly: "They were quite impressive," he said.

The Big Green lost to the Tigers in the semifinals 4-15, 8-15.

Dartmouth's team will advance to the New England Collegiate Volleyball League Playoffs on April 14 and then wraps up its season with the national competition the weekend of April 18.
