The Big Green had the largest presence on this year's First Team All-Ivy Baseball roster as four Dartmouth players were honored in the 1997 year-end coaches' pick, announced yesterday afternoon. Junior Dan Godfrey was named as the league's top reliever, and Eric Anderson '99 was selected as the Ancient Eight's best catcher, while freshman Brian Nickerson and sophomore Mike Conway were named the top infielders in the shortstop and third-base positions, respectively. In all, Dartmouth earned eight mentions in the 1997 All-Ivy selections as outfielder Andrew Spencer '97 earned Second-Team honors, while Mike Armstrong '97 was named Honorable-Mention in the second-base position, and Aaron Meyer '00 took Honorable-Mention as Dartmouth's DH. Nickerson rounded out Dartmouth's billing on the league's elite roster as he was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year -- an honor somewhat dwarfed by his concurrent appearance on the Ivy's First-Team. Mike Conway '99 was the league's only unanimous First-Team pick as he rifled a sensational 61 hits on the season.
The women's softball team earned three All-Ivy mentions as two sophomores and one senior were named to the Honorable Mention in this year's All-Ivy picks. Jane Peachy '99 was honored as one of the league's top catchers as she protected the plate on defense and then roped clutch hits on offense from the same spot on the field. Throughout the season, she made numerous appearances on the league's batting leaderboard. Senior Julia Doster was named one of the Ivy League's top outfielders as she kept the fly-balls from hitting the grass in centerfield all season long. In addition, Doster was the Big Green's only Ivy League Player of the Week honoree (April 5 selection). Sophomore Gretchen Saegh rounded out the Dartmouth contingent as she earned an Honorable Mention award for her solid play at first base. The Big Green ended their second varsity-status season with a 8-26-0 overall record, 1-11 Ivy.
He is, arguably, the largest student currently enrolled at Dartmouth. But that fact alone doesn't make senior Alex Ghanotakis the big man on campus. What distinguishes this guy from the others is the fact that he won two field events at the Heptagonal Championships this past weekend. On Saturday, Ghanotakis defended his Heps title in the hammer with an NCAA qualifying toss of 206-4.
With an Ivy crown already on the mantel, the sixth-seeded Big Green traveled down to Boston last Friday to take on third-seeded Harvard in the NCAA East Regional. Just two weeks earlier, Dartmouth fell in a 6-1 decision against the talent-laden Crimson.

Six Dartmouth lacrosse stars were named to the 1997 All-Ivy lacrosse teams late yesterday afternoon. The women's lacrosse squad led the Big Green in All-Ivy awards as all three captains earned spots on the Ivy League's First Team. Kim Mendelson '97 was named as one of the league's best attackmen while Andrea Krumholz '97 and Kelly Hannigan '97 won awards for their stellar play on defense. Mendelson, who is on the First Team for the second straight year, was slowed early in the season by an injury, but still managed 24 goals and two assists. Krumholz, who was Second Team All-League a year ago, held her defensive assignments to a combined 14 goals this season. Hannigan was tough on both ends of the field as she scored 17 points (8 goals, 9 assists) and recorded 64 groundballs/interceptions. Rookie attack Jacque Weitzel earned Second Team All-Ivy honors as did starting Big Green goalie Sarah Carlson '99. On the men's side, senior attack Brian Merritt was Dartmouth's lone representative on the All-Ivy roster as he earned Second Team honors for the 1997 season.
The Big Green concluded the 1997 season on a tough note, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Harvard, 2-1 and 8-0, Thursday. In the first game, Stacy Sanders '00 took the loss, despite holding the Crimson to only two runs on nine hits. Junior Bess Tortolani had a good game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, a stolen base and an RBI. Harvard iced the second game in the second inning with a five-run outburst, knocking out Laura Mills '00, who went one and two-thirds innings for the Big Green. The Big Green finished their campaign with an 8-26 record, 1-11 Ivy League.
Co-Captain Steve Sugarman '97 had a finale performance that was as sweet as sugar on Sunday as he won the individual title at the Black Knight Invitational at Army. In the first round of the tournament, Sugarman shot a 73 to lead the field going into the final round.

The women's lacrosse team will cap off its regular season this weekend as they take on the top-ranked Maryland Terrapins at Chase Field on Saturday. The match is sure to be a battle between champions since the Terps clinched the ACC title on April 20 with a narrow 11-10 win over Virginia while the ninth-ranked Big Green earned a share of the Ivy League title with a 15-9 victory over Harvard three days later. The Terrapins, who will be shooting for their third consecutive national title, will enter the match with a near-perfect 17-1 record for the season.
