Young guns face off in best match of weekend's Invite

No single match over the course of the weekend equaled the tension, intrigue and emotion of the semifinal match in the doubles tournament, which pitted the second-seeded Dartmouth duo of Jayne Ahmed '05 and Katie Jaxheimer '06 against the Boston University team of Elena deMendoza and Alana Marcu. The match was characterized by Ahmed and Jaxheimer managing to dig themselves into considerable holes, only to resurrect their chances time and time again by capturing the most critical of points.

Golden boy returns with golden goal in Big Green win

In the words of the Grateful Dead, the Big Green just keeps truckin' on. The men's soccer team (6-6-1) extended its winning streak to four and is now unbeaten in its last five games after a gritty 1-0 victory yesterday afternoon against Holy Cross (10-4-1). Dartmouth entered the game prepared for a dog-fight, and that's exactly what it got from a tough Holy Cross team that was nationally-ranked until the last few weeks. The Big Green benefited from the fact the Crusaders were playing on only one day's rest after a postponement pushed their game against Army back to Sunday. The Big Green, however, was battered in its own right and was forced to go at it without the services of co-captain Matt Miller '03. Miller sat out Tuesday's game with a knee injury, though the team was relieved to see X-ray results come back negative, making it likely that Miller will be back to anchor the midfield on Sunday. While Dartmouth controlled play for most of the first half, the team looked like it was having trouble adjusting to the field.

Men's Soccer: Break the Big City Curse to Break the Tie

On a roll, the Dartmouth men's soccer team is heading south for a Saturday showdown with Columbia, and while the team may be getting itself into a New York state of mind, it's certain that revenge will be on the mind of the Big Green veterans when they take the field tomorrow afternoon. Two years ago, Dartmouth saw its hopes for an Ivy League title vanish when the Lions pulled off a shocking upset on their home turf. Now, the Big Green (4-6-1, 1-1-1 Ivy) and Lions (6-4-1, 1-1-1 Ivy) are tied for third, which makes tomorrow's match-up a crucial one.

Men's Ice Hockey: Get Out the Shotguns, It's Hockey Season

For those of you who can't wait any longer or just need something to get your mind off the grind, consider yourself lucky that the Dartmouth men's hockey team returns to action tonight. The Big Green steps onto the ice here at Thompson Arena for an exhibition match against the University of Guelph at 7 p.m. The visiting Gryphons hail from Ontario, Canada, which you probably could have guessed at if you considered their take on what would otherwise be the "Griffins." Mutated eagle-lion freaks from hell aside, Guelph should be able to put a young home team to work. "They're gonna have 26-year-olds going against our 18-year-old guys, but it will be a good contest for us, get used to playing some real hockey," co-captain Trevor Byrne '03 said. The nine Dartmouth freshmen will get their first taste of college hockey, and probably a fair amount of playing time, as Coach Bob Gaudet '81 tweaks the eventual lines for the regular season. "My hope is that we get to see most, if not all, of the young players play," Gaudet said.
